Elvis had been making soundtracks almost completely exclusively since the early 1960's. Some of those early soundtracks (Blue Hawaii, for example) were actually quite good however by the mid 60's his soundtracks had a noticeable decrease in quality and his spotty soundtracks seemed more and more irrelevant now that people like Bob Dylan and The Beatles were making cohesive album statements along with writing their own songs.

This soundtrack for the mediocre movie 'Frankie And Johnny' (that Elvis also starred in) is really weird and doesn't feel like many other Elvis soundtracks from that era. There's traditional pop that sounded dated even in 1966, sure but there's also a surprising presence of blues, country and 'western' ish music. This will catch a listener that expected an album worth of songs in a similar dated vein to the top 40 hit of the title track by surprise. Elvis is also in pretty strong vocal form although his singing does come off as a bit sterile, lacking any of the grit of his rock n' roll records, but this isn't a rock n' roll record.

Songs like "What Every Woman Lives For", "Shout It Out" and the excellent, bluesy "Beginners Luck" proved Elvis still had it and there's a couple of strong album tracks like "Down by the Riverside and When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Hard Luck" all fit well into the listening experience of the LP as one. The rest of the record is filled with that pre rock cabaret music I was on about earlier, that was just the curse of a mid 1960's Elvis soundtrack album unfortunately. The album also suffers from generally poor production all around which only makes the bad songs even more sufferable and it takes the good, hell even great songs down a notch.

The film it self was only a minor hit and it didn't get great reviews from critics. The album it self was a big seller, reaching the top 20, getting re - issued MANY times and getting a gold certification. The title track was also a top 30 hit in the states (and top 20 in the UK) for Elvis too. Not too bad for Elvis considering the musical climate by 1966 had rendered many people of the same generation as Elvis all but obsolete.

Still a far cry from what he what previously released and even what he would release in the coming years.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.

(b)         The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)         The album may or may not come with its original color bonus photo (we assume that it does, but are not entirely certain)

(d)         The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

COVER IS STILL SEALED; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

[NOTE: BASED ON THE APPEARANCE OF THE COVER, WE BELIEVE  THAT THERE IS A BETTER THAN 50/50 CHANCE THAT THIS ALBUM WAS RESEALED BY THE RETAILER OR DISTRIBUTOR[

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       The cover has a tiny nondescript mark (it looks like a tiny stamp of some sort) on the wheel of fortune behind Elvis' back (BARELY VISIBLE)

-       Cover has two tiny, almost invisible, pinholes (or staple holes) in one corner. These tiny holes are NOT cutout holes.

-       Back cover has a tiny dent/peel-off mark on the lower edge of the paper slick (less than 1/8th square inch in size)

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 5 (back side)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-       Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the top seam   (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
