Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only very light/light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: SHVL 772.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: The album itself is scarce and never easy to find in top conditions. This copy with its 1 G / 1 G mothers and stampers is within the very first 300 ever pressed – the ULTIMATE first pressing and in superb condition. This is the rarest example made and with these labels, mothers and stampers, it could be the best that will ever be offered. Do not underestimate how difficult and elusive this album is.

Brief Info: Please note, this item has been relisted due to non-payment from another zero-rated time-waster. This was the band’s second album and is an acid-blues classic and carried on the raunchy Broughton sound. For me, this is their masterwork and the very peak of their creativity, the twisted ‘Psychopath’ being the highlight for me amongst some brilliant tracks. “I Can’t Help Being Different, Little Girl” pleads a crazed Broughton. A band that always gave the audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at these events. One of the earliest pressings available and in stunning all round condition, it’s almost hard to believe this record dates this far back. Totally complete with promotional inner and insert, a lightly played record and super clean cover - it hardly gets much better. Any collector of this cult band and the early Harvest classics, this is a must-have item. Being the earliest ever issued too, makes for a much rarer copy, most seen or offered are later examples.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate .

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a gatefold format with front and back laminate. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the original ‘Patents pending’ text. Both lyric insert and inner are also included.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both side are clean, clear and very shiny and all the laminate is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. Very light surface marks are only evident under angled light. There is minimal traces of creasing, but the top left corner on the back has one, but only small with little visual impact. Any others are minor and fine edge types. Even with angled viewing, there is barely any friction rubs or dulling and a high degree of freshness is retained. For attractiveness, this will take a fair amount of beating and most fans will enjoy this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor burr to the top right corner edge, that apart, and it’s pretty tiny anyway, nothing else to fault and both faces look practically as made.

Top Edges: Minor thickening to the back panel end, this being somewhat critical. This apart, nothing else to fault.

Bottom Edges: Minor rub traces only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: The odd very small laminate peel apart, a very fine spine. Solid, very straight and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. A minor central crease has formed simply because it’s been opened a few times, all natural of course. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and mainly intact laminate, this is very slightly ‘sunken’ into the naturally forming crease.

Corners: All in great shape with minimal tip rubbing, the top left the back has a crease as already mentioned.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This fantastic example should please mosty collectors.

The Inner: The promotional Harvest inner is around EX, it has lost its lining which is hardly uncommon but it’s been replaced with an anti-static very soft replacement one. Clean, attractive with little creasing or glue darkening. The edges are all intact with NO repairs but one small flipback tear has been reglued.

The Lyric Insert: Mint(-) with just the odd few microscopic toning spots, but look intensely to see any – not on screen, they are far too tiny, I mean for real (should you get the opportunity). This is very clean, uncreased with very sharp edges. They will rarely get seen much better or whiter than this – of course, guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX++ and this is as close to Mint(-) as they get. Any surface trace blemishes or ultra fine hairlines barely even register and of course, have not sound. Only with the closest scrutiny under light will these removal type traces even be seen, and few albums this age and type ever avoid them as the very least. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: “Negative, negative, negative” – This Harvest classic plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean first pressing. This is the connoisseur’s choise, nothing betters a well-looked after very first pressing. As stated above, within the first 300 ever made, these earliest cuts always have superior sound quality. The finer details just seem to diminish slightly as they get pressed more and more and that’s why the audiophile collector cherish them the most. But never easy to find of course. 1G / 1G Harvest-EMI albums are elusive and do no surface often, those that are, not always in the best playing conditions. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
