EDDY GRANT Lp. Original UK 1st pressing on TORPEDO label (TOL 500), from 1970. Killer UK black psych session with Caribbean influenced funk and pounding psychedelic rock arrangements, masterminded by Brixton based producer, musician and singer, Eddy Grant. The seldom seen UK issue is the 1st pressing (his Hello Africa Lp is a later, inferior 2nd issue on Ice). Stunning music that fits somewhere in between his 32nd Turnoff / Zapatta Schmidt / Zubaba and Sundae Times projects and definitely, the hottest and funkiest recording from the cult Torpedo label. This Lp includes an alternative and amazingly sleazy psych funk version of STONE COLD CAT and a jaw-dropping, 6min+ unabridged version of Eddy's NOBODY GOT TIME Island funk anthem. Actually, a superior and different mix to the short 7-inch version on Torpedo and the Lp version completely destroys the later edit by his Coachhouse Rhythm Section on Ice label. WHERE'S YOU GOIN' TO MY FRIENDS is raw dub funk with murky, phased vocals / one note basslines / slinky guitars / clavinet and bumpy hip hop drums all the way through. All the instrumentation on this track was played by Eddy except the drums by Remi Kabaka. Proto glam rock / delirious voodoo funk with Incredible Bongo Band style percussion and politically charged Last Poets sounding spoken word rap on WHY CAN'T WE SEE (percussion player Tony Morgan is the man responsible for the exotic beats on this track). Some crunching rock breaks finish this tune. Hard to believe Eddy was only in his early 20s when this session was recorded. Great for DJs. Stripped back, reggae dub production / fuzz distortions / wah wah / afro horns / B-boy drums and super-infectious ghetto funk rhythms with syncopated drums etc. Will appeal to lovers of the Chains And Black Exhaust funk rock mix / Purple Image and the funkier side of Jimi Hendrix. Very rare Lp!!! Full tracklisting: MY QUEEN TONIGHT / WHY CAN'T WE SEE / STONE COLD CAT / WHERE'S YOU GOIN' TO MY FRIENDS / HELLO AFRICA / BABY YOU'RE MOVING RIGHT / BAD BAD BROTHER / SHAME ON YOU / NOBODY'S GOT TIME / I WISH I KNEW THE ANSWER
