Byrd in Hand
I am auctioning off selected items from my personal collection of top-drawer LPs. Here we have Donald Byrd’s Byrd in Hand, a mono copy of Blue Note 4019, an original edition Blue Note gem recorded May 31, 1959 with an all-star crew: Byrd, trumpet; Charlie Rouse, tenor saxophone; Pepper Adams, baritone saxophone; Walter Davis, Jr., piano; Sam Jones, bass; and Art Taylor, drums. The playing throughout is excellent – the combined effect of trumpet, tenor and bari in the front line, and with moving parts also, can be breathtaking – and there are several of the leader’s distinctive compositions, high them the evocative “Here I Am.” Here Pepper plays the bass line with Jones, creating wonderful tonal contrast with trumpet and tenor on top.
Byrd in Hand is a session in the legendary Blue Note modern jazz vein, with tight ensemble work and engaging improvisations that, while recorded in the studio, has a vibrant, live feel. This record has proven over time to be one well worth owning.
The record has been cleaned on a VPI Record cleaner and is graded after being played as follows:
Vinyl: Mint -. The LP has been played a very few times and there is no surface noise whatsoever. The vinyl is shiny and there are no scratches or scuff marks. A pristine copy of this A-1 album.
Labels: both sides have a deep groove with labels that are bright and clean without marks. The printed address is the West 63rd, NYC with Inc. in Blue Note name. There is a Plastylite ‘p’ or ‘ear’ in dead wax, along with Rudy Van Gelder’s stamped initials.
Cover: Mint -. The front is shiny and without ring wear. It looks brand new. Likewise the flip side. The rear label address is West 43rd, New York 10023. (All aspects of cover notation and LP markings are stated as being original by Fred Cohen, in his landmark book on Blue Note original pressings, “Blue Note Records: A Guide to Identifying Original Pressings –Jazz Record Center Books.)
