Dire Straits Making Movies

Making Movies was Dire Straits’ third studio album, released on October 17, 1980 on Vertigo Records for the world and Warner Bros.Records releasing it in the U.S.  The album produced two major rock airplay tracks, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Tunnel of Love.”  The album was recorded in New York at the Power Plant and was produced by Jimmy Iovine and Mark Knopfler.  It peaked on the Billboard 200 album chart at number 19 and was certified Platinum.

Test pressings were produced by record companies to test the pressings of albums before going into full production.  Sometimes they would be used to get music out to publications for review due to lead times, facilitating timely reviews with street dates. The amount of tests pressed varied on the amount of people required to hear a record for quality assurance and/or publications being serviced.

This particular test pressing is for the Dire Straits release, Making Movies (BSK 3480), which is written in the top right -hand corner of the front cover. The cover has a die cut circle revealing the generic white label.  The label indicates Warner Bros. Records inc. and has the disclaimer: Available only to technical and other authorized personnel for the limited purpose of testing and review. NOT TO BE PUBLICLY PERFORMED, REPRODUCED, SOLD OR OTHERWISE DISTRIBUTED

There is an unattached label copy document (dated September 5, 1980 which would be in keeping with an October 17th street date). It indicates (Side 1 & Side 2) song titles, timings, composers, publishing companies and producers(pictured). Hidden away for 44 years…  This is fine piece for Dire Straits or test pressing collectors.
