 -Artist / Group: Devrons

-Mini bio: Extremely obscure garage/surf instrumental group who had one minor regional hit with their 1962 released of the rockin' surf/garage instrumental Brand X.

-This extremely rare Devrons single is incorrectly listed in the 2010 edition of Rockin' Records as a part of the recorded output of the Canadian garage group The Deverons featuring Burton Cummings. Nothing could be farther from the truth, The Devrons are an American Garage/surf instrumental group who released their one and only Brand X single in 1962 on the American record label Lotus Records (Lotus 902). Brand X was heard by Canadian Deverons guitarist Derek Blake in 1962 and to quote from a 2000 Burton Cummings internet forum, Burton Cummings states:

"The name Deverons is a direct rip-off from an American group called The Devrons. I Know nothing of this group, except that they had one minor, regional hit with a guitar instrumental called Brand X. I have checked Joel Whitburn's books on Billboard's charts, and according to him, this Brand X record never charted for even one week on Billboard's top 100. Derek had heard and learned the instrumental and I suppose he became enamoured with the name...probably kept saying it over and over in his head like a mantra, thereby falling prey to its sonic spell...Derek had subtly added an extra E to the spelling and this band from St. John's High School (Winipeg) came to be known as the DEVERONS. This was autumn of 1962."

-Then further on in the forum a guy named Ray posts: I Have a copy of this Brand X 45. At least I am pretty sure I have the Brand X. All instumental correct?? I was going to surprise you with a CDR one day at the clubhouse but since you're here online. I also do not have the software to convert LP to CDR. Ray

-Burton Cummings responds: "Wow...do you really have Brand X by the Devrons? Lemme tell ya, that's a Rare record...in Canada I think it was on the Barry label, white with big red logo on top, print information in black lettering...I had it once, but I don't think I do any longer...would love at least a cassette dub for old time's sake...let me know if that's at all possible...I'm really impressed!

-Ray responds: "I will; check tomorrow at work. I'm in the 'Peg so it would be easy to get. I would even deliver it personally backstage June 30th. I missed the chat Friday night as I went to one list and no one was there. my email is XXXXXXXX if you have to contact me off the board.

-Naturally, we have no way to know if Burton Cummings ever got ahold of that copy of Brand X, but we can tell you that we have a nice VG+ copy on the Barry label which we are putting up for auction right here, right now.

-Interesing to note that Brand X has been compiled on a CD titled Ultimate 60's Surf Classics but we're unable to determine if the flip side Battle Hymn also appers on the CD.

-Brand X written by band member Mike Appel is a fast-tempo guitar driven surf instrumental with at least two guitars involved, driving percussion, percolating bass and is similar in sound to the American instrumental group Fireballs.

-Battle Hymn  co-written credits on label by band member Mike Appel is a fast tempo instrumental garage rocker with flute, drums, driving drums and bass with gun shot sound effects, band members yelping, horns and is based on the classic Battle Hymn Of The Republic which was written in 1862 and was a hit for The Morman Tabernacle Choir in 1959.

-Label: Barry B-3091X (Released in the USA on Lotus 902)

-Barry Records was the Canadian shadow label that pressed under license the American Lotus Record Catalog in Canada. For every ten Lotus 45's pressed in the U.S., there was only one Barry 45  pressed in Canada. The Canadian Barry Record Label is very collectible today.

-Visual grade: VG+ due to several scuffs on both sides which do not affect play. Battle Hymn has  larger scuffs, but still does not affect play.

Record grading:

(M) Mint: We don't use this grade as no record is perfect, even SS records can have tiny flaws.

(SS) Still sealed: Still sealed in the factory shrink wrap.

(M-) Mint minus: A nearly perfect record. The record will show no obvious signs of wear. Original finish intact. Picture sleeves should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

(VG+) Very good plus: The record will show some signs that it was played or otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches. Picture sleeves may have some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a small seam split.

(VG) Very good: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record or sleeve will be more pronounced in a VG record or picture sleeve. Groove wear may be noticeable, the record may have light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound, but the foreign noises will be less prominent than the music. Picture sleeves may have quite prominent ring wear. Creases, folds, seam splits and tears will be more obvious and may appear on all three sides, and there may be writing as well.

(VG-) Very good minus: Foreign noises may be about as prominent as the music. The record still plays through without skipping. The picture sleeve will have more significant seam splits, perhaps to the point where they were taped closed, and highly obvious ring wear and heavier writing. Can serve as a filler until a better one comes along.

(G) Good: We seldom offer a good record for sale unless it is particularily rare for the following reasons: Foreign noises are louder than the recorded music and listening can be distracted by the noise. May or may not play through without skipping, but should be so noted. Picture sleeves are so badly seam split that they may not be able to contain the record within.Tears, folds, writing and ring wear may be overwheming.
