Description

This is a very rare genuine Australian first press 1971 dress cover with stamped matrix numbers. The first thing to say is that this version of the man who sold the world LP has an extremely delicate thin cover, which is very vulnerable to ring wear. When compared to other surviving copies, this one is in comparatively good condition. The Australian version has a very slightly smaller cover than the U.K. dress cover. There are two very light hairline scratches on Side 1. I have tried to photograph the hairlines but they are too faint to photograph. The record is in VG+ condition, looks good and plays without noise. The label on side 1 has two faint initials (please see photographs). The sleeve has ring wear and storage wear, (the ring wear being especially associated with this album cover). Please refer to the photographs as they form the best part of the description. In 1971, Mercury (actually a subsidiary of Philips) issued Bowie's third studio album - The man who sold the world. As indicated by the 1995 issue of Record Collector, this version is even more valuable than the UK dress cover. Australia was the only country aside from the UK to get the rare and valuable dress cover. It was manufactured in Australia (not imported). The general view is that only around 500 to a maximum of 1,000 copies would have been made. If you are looking for an album in perfect condition, then this may not be for you. However, if you are interested in an extremely rare album from David’s early period, this is well worth considering. Thank you for looking, please contact me if you have any questions.
