For sale is a beautiful early 1972 UK pre-Mainman pressing of Hunky Dory.
This matches Discogs variant 1 of the sought-after early repress (orange labels, no Mainman credit).
Key details:
• Glossy orange RCA Victor labels
• Matte (non-laminated) sleeve printed in England by Robert Stace
• GEM logo on the rear of the sleeve and on the original lyric insert
• Mainman is NOT mentioned — true early pressing
Matrix / Runout (etched):
• Side A: APRS 5947-2E
• Side B: APRS 5948-3T + “Rasputin”
Condition – 55 years old and still fantastic:
The sleeve looks amazing for its age. Front and back are clean with only light edge and corner wear (normal for a matte 1972 sleeve). No splits, no writing, no stains, no big creases. Spine is solid and it displays really well.
The original lyric insert is in unbelievable condition — almost perfect.
Comes with the original thick paper inner sleeve too.
The vinyl is glossy and flat. There are a couple of marks (as expected on a record over 50 years old), but nothing deep. It plays absolutely brilliant — clean, dynamic, full sound with minimal noise. A real pleasure to listen to.
This is genuinely one of the nicest examples of this early pressing I’ve seen. You won’t find a better-looking or better-sounding 1972 orange-label copy at this price. A must-have for any serious Bowie collector.
