About 800 years ago, pronouncing the name Dzjenghis Khan sufficed to make people tremble from fear. The great Khan ruled an immense empire and was none for his ruthless cruelty. Nowadays, Dzjenghis Khan is a San Francisco-based trio trying to conquer the world with their wild seventies heavy acidrock, having chosen the Netherlands as their starting point. As it happens, ‘Hey You’, their new LP has been released on the Motorwolf label from The Hague
No idea if they will succeed. At least they have enough energy to make it work., although it has to be seen how many people will fall for these very authentic sounding bluesy three minute garagerockers. Dzjenghis Khan sounds as a strange fusion of the old-style hardrock from Blue Cheer and Leafhound mixed with the kind of garagepunk once patented by Jeff Dahl. In ‘Shameless’ it even sounds as if Mr. Dahl has taken the microphone. It is all pretty straight forward and there is not much profoundness to be discovered in the music. A few chords, a pile of vintage equipment and songs about that one subject garagerockers of all nations cannot stop singing about: girls, more particular evil chicks. Well, not all songs, since ‘Mind Detergent’ happens to be an instrumental track.
The rather rudimentary recording and production makes this a release for the real fans of the genre. One is not surprised if a a record recorded in 1971 in a low budget studio sounds kind of dusty and hollow, but even then most records sounded fine. The lousy soundquality reveals the simplicity of the songs. OK, the Ramones had simple songs as well, not even all of them had three chords, but nevertheless: Dzjenghis Khan (the band) may have chosen the name of one of the most impressive persons in history, they certainly have not made an impressive and unforgettable record.
