Label/Format: Philips – Original very deep maroon examples that are both deeply textured with matt finish.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive – retaining superb ultra deep dark hue with no rubbing to the delicate rough surface. Only a very small few, very light and fine spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. All evidence points to a very lightly played record with no hole chipping or enlargement. These vintage popular records, in the mono format are seldom seen this clean and still offering superb sound, even when played on a very revealing LP12 stereo turntable for which they were never really designed.

Rarity: Quite scarce, especially the mono in such lovely all-round condition. So many of these will be found ruined by heavy usage on old mono record players. Those stunning vocals destroyed by worn, blunted and chipped inferior sapphire pickups of the time, such equipment tracking at almost unbelieveable weights many younger collectors can hardly even comprehend. This gem has more than survived this period and still sounds fabulous even on very revealing equipment I always use (as listed in great detail towards the end of the listing).

Brief Info: Dusty’s second album, beautifully packaged with inner book and attached (somewhat gimmick) inner sleeve, that includes vintage black and white pictures from her television appearances on ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’ and ‘Ready Steady Go’. Superb early songs from this very soulful singer artist who later became very popular and equally successful, there is no question, she is one of the UK’s greatest ever female vocalists. Issued in the UK in 1965, this powerful, soulful album is a gem and includes some wonderful songs by quality writers of the day. Not really classified as a Northern Soul singer, but her music and style offers more than an insight within the genre – she is often pigeon-holed as ‘Blue-Eyed Soul’. This national treasure can be heard to absolute maximum pleasure from this stunningly preserved mono record, the format of the era. So very difficult to find like this, the wonderful vocals are often ruined by heavy tracking equipment or was simply played to destruction, often with blunt or chipped cheap sapphire stylus. These inferior pickups wore very quickly and few changed them as often as was required. More unusual to find the popular albums that have clearly been played so little and still offering top quality sound – and this one really delivers. From beginning to end, all is focused, sharp with minimal traces of anything unwanted. This too being played on a highly revealing stereo system. The cover is a work of art with a 12-page book and lovely vintage black and white and colour photographs of which some I have photographed for this listing – quite honestly, I could have put on more but restricted to 12 in the Ebay style I use. This a heavyweight cover but the inner pages are delicate, as is the fixed inner sleeve on the inside back cover. All elements, including this fragile inner sleeve, which is unsplit or damaged, are in super condition and seldom found like this. A class act in a gorgeous package which, almost unbelievably is 50-year-old, few available examples will better this significantly and it does wonderful justice to her memory.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): A laminated gatefold format on the outside ‘covers’, these has a gentle of texturing which is a little unusual. Inside is a 12-page booklet that is held in place with the FOUR original staples. A mix of black and white and colour pictures and text. The inside back cover has a fixed inner that holds the record, the front and back is made extra thick, like a book cover, to protect the delicate inner parts. Made in England (I would assume), but uncredited. A stunning historic piece of popular music art and beautifully preserved overall.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain superb shine, freshness and clarity with barely any dulling, creasing or marks. Even under light, the surfaces are immaculate with no scuffs or press marks. The only tiny hint of any ‘wear’ is very gentle rubbing, minor thickening to the top and bottom edges that will always be prone and fragile. But we are talking minimal and almost nit-picking for such a gorgeous items. No peeling or scuffing, even to spine folds, this has been well looked after and stored, avoiding any knocks or abuse.

Cover Inner Gatefold: All in very impressive condition. The book pages are in tremendous condition and look barely handled. The inside front and final inner pages are made with textured green paper, these are clean and really impressive, the texturing of the paper giving a more de luxe finish. Tiny thickening to rear sheet on the top edge with a minute nick only which is being as critical as possible. The FOUR original staples are very secure and solid and the book is still very solidly attached to cover, all pages totally unloosened. These staples are all untarnished and clean as seen in the very middle area, in fact they look exactly as when punched in 50 years ago. The fixed rear record sleeve is perfect with no splits or tears and remains very white. This was not lined and retains a perfect neat window. I suggest to any winning bidder, not to use this for storing the record as it could scuff the surface, and also risk splitting this fragile feature part.

Top Edges: Very thick board-like card is used on the main cover, minimal wear or thickening to either. Both straight and rest very flush and neat.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, any burring to these storage edges is gentle and very light again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Largely the same again. The record is stored in a fixed paper inner sleeve on the inside back cover as stated already.

Spine and Text: A heavy-duty and very thick, robust, rounded type spine in fantastic condition. Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so all edges are parallel and neat. All the bold blue text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, even the folds have avoided any scuffs, wear or dinks.

Corners: The spine pairs are practically unworn with practically as-made shape. The right ones have small tip rubs with very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A glorious piece of mid-1960s art, made at a time when cost and quality did not seem an issue. A very strong all-round example of this classic cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Finding this with the inside contents all little short of as-made, is very difficult indeed. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and this hardly does a 50-year-old mono record full justice. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and very solidly pressed or robust and tough Philips vinyl. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence. A few very light and superficial surface marks of gentle paper scuffs, almost certainly from the unlined inner which is not so easy to insert or remove from – best stored in an independent lined inner as always provided here. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, and the mostly very fine and minor surface marks, that show little in normal daylight conditions, are all pretty much all ignored when playing. In context, such blemishes are very minor indeed and how many popular mono record of this immense age will not have some? That is being purely realistic, people who bought records in this era of more limited home entertainments, did so to play and enjoy – that a plain and simple fact. Visually a still a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very impressive mono record plays even above its generally impressive visual grading and above with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. All those wonderful vocals fully intact with no clipping, pressing noises or loss of clarity – that is the real difference. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with barely anything on the music – the odd gentle tick being near impossible to avoid for the entire duration, again being purely realistic when playing on such clinical equipment. Few copies, especially in mono will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no tracking issues*, I feel very sure this record has been played relatively lightly and has been clearly well stored and mainly carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful early Dusty record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
