Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks are moderate and lightly show with normal viewing, seen more under angled light. But have no fears, this is a very clean record and it plays superbly for most all with very little at all unwanted.

Brief Info: In 1968, Dusty Springfield changed her style to a more soulful sound and then issued a masterpiece. Regarded by many as one of the greatest female vocal albums ever issued, this album regularly features in all-time great albums lists whether compiled by critics or the music-buying public. But, the unbelievable fact is, this album failed to sell at all well when released – it failed to even chart, making original copies elusive, scarce and sort-after. Such is the reappraisal of this album, it stands as possibly the greatest white female soul album ever made. A pivitol and landmark recording, but it’s failure almost ended Springfield’s career. Dusty’s success came mainly from quality singles, and this album features her greatest ever one in ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ – an evergreen classic for which she will always be remembered. But there is not a bad song included on this album, her voice reached levels of sensitive brilliance that few could have hardly imagined possible. Beautifully produced with her strongest ever material and vocally the lady was inspired. Quite why this failed to sell is one of the mysteries of this time, but hardly unique – other masterworks like The Kinks ‘Village Green’ and ‘Arthur’ suffered the same fate – now there are simply not enough copies to go around as demand for these classics increases. For those who did buy this album, most played it to heavily and this has always been a difficult one to find unscathed by heavy-tracking record players of the era. Overall, this is a very clean copy that sounds terrific? The cover is also clean and nice as well with only gentle reminders of its considerable age.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single, fully laminated format. Printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains fine shine, good freshness and clarity, any dulling around the thick record rim is modest and light as seen under angled light. A little quite fine patchy lifting on the spine edge and an equally small few fine surface creases. A little fine rubbing on the back on the bottom of the left edge, this is minimal. The graphic and colour remains strong and overall, this is still an attractive cover.

Top Edge: Practically unworn, neat and straight, small tip rubs only.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with little wear, just a little mild thickening or burring seen viewed end-on, few vintage covers avoid this when left natural after usage. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A quite thin spine that has little wear again. Solid, straight, with any compression light. All the text is present and unworn under the solid, clear and still smooth laminate.

Corners: The corners have tip rubs and retain fine shape overall.

Cover Summary: A solid original cover for a classic album, not perfect with a few gentle reminders it’s now well into it’s forties and very difficult to find anything like ‘perfect’. It will prove quite difficult to find significantly better. This beautiful item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this came in a Polydor-style inner that is date coded 16/049 (April 1969), so this copy is very early. Moderately aged with some darkening of the adhesive on the seam areas. This is polylined and has two crisp neat window circles and no edge splits or repairs. Some corner creasing and crinkle is hard to avoid.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very attractive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays with any surface marks few, fine, light and faint as mostly seen under bright angled light. In this case, I feel the spindle marks do not tell the truth, many owners used the label as a guide to locate the hole, whch often a single play left several marks. So this evidence is never reliable or conclusive and purely speculative to number of plays. For those who bought this classic album, most played it heavily and finding copies totally unblemished is beyond difficult. Few copies will better this substantially and many would have been subjected to use on heavy-tracking mono record players of the time. There is scant evidence of this on this splendid copy. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This legendary masterpiece plays mostly above it’s clean visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound (that the most crucial factor on such a wonderful vocal performance as this), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and very little at all was noted. The lack of pops, clicks and groove wear major pluses and barely anything spoilt the wonderful content of this record. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this copy has been played relatively lightly and has been generally carefully handled. I can easily tolerate the odd polite reminder I am listening to a vintage vinyl record, it is almost part of the experience – it is distortion and groove wear I detest and this has avoided that. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – and the word ‘wonderful’ could rarely be more appropriately applied to an album within this genre. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. Remember, groove wear and distortion is invisible and I have seen near mint looking records that have it. The legacy of this wonderful woman is forever encaptured on this vinyl masterpiece.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
