Perhaps the most influential name in experimental circles alongside Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse et al, TNB were one of the original proponents of 'anti-music' in the early '80s, a field that includes things like electronic noise and improvised/found sounds. Unlike some of their Industrial contemporaries of the late '70s/early '80s, the Blockaders' music went beyond 'noise' and beyond 'music' even - this was art of sound in a very literal sense where each composition was built from a range of sounds as opposed to structured music in a conventional sense, and their recordings were by and large released in ultra-limited editions. With Viva Negativa! just about everyone you can think of  in experimental music pays their respects to the duo. Spread across two stunning 4-LP box-sets, Thurston Moore, KK Null, Z'EV, Prurient, Keith Fullerton Whitman, V/Vm, Merzbow, Jim O'Rourke, John Wiese, Wolf Eyes, Oren Ambarchi and, urm, Broken Penis Orchestra, among many, many others, pay tribute/remix their work. The culmination of several years worth of commissioned remixes, extrapolations on and collaborations with the work of TNB, the UK’s most consistently feral Noise group. The quality of the track listing is pretty staggering – a testament to the liberating effect those early TNB sides had on a whole generation of otherwise culturally disenfranchised post-punks – and plays even better as a state-of-disunion round-up than recent attempts at void-articulation like Gold Leaf Branches, Invisible Pyramid et al. Viva Negativa! is like a salto mortale of negative dialectics. But maybe TNB accomplish with it a not insignificant point of their Manifesto (1982): 'Now let The Farce be made a Farce of!' And isn’t it likewise consistent to collaborate: 'Have the courage to be destructive, and you soon will realise what a wonderful flower of unanimity will rise from the fertile ashes' (Max Steiner).  Tributes by 75!!! fellow Blockaders and wreckers with echoes of TNB’s sledge hammer. Anti-art? A moustache for Mona Lisa? Bonmot as a sequel novel? Viva Negativa! is something that according to its own logic shouldn’t exist. TNB are the epitome of harsh Noise and anti-music. On Viva Negativa!, both well known and less known artists remix or interpret their work. With contributions by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Scanner, it is evident that their influence reaches far beyond avant garde and post-Industrial music and this tribute is a mammoth-opus full of references and obeisances. - BLACK

'We are the adverts that mean nothing, we are the speakers who say nothing, we are the fighters who do not fight, we are the creators who destroy.' While Punk has returned to normal Rock music, TNB have presented their anti-music approach, collaborating with, amongst others, Coil and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth). A goal of Industrial music has been to lead the habit of listening (intro, verse, refrain, melody) to absurdity. Viva Negativa! starts where Einsturzende Neubauten ends ('You must destroy to build.') and certainly is a genre-crossing conglomeration of sound artists. - Punk Ist Wie Ne Religion

Somewhere between a tribute and a remix project. In some of these tracks there are original sounds of TNB and some are similar sounds of the artists' own making. Viva Negativa! reads like a who's who in experimental music. The laptop/microsound scene seems to be to a lesser extent represented and the overall emphasis lies on the world of Noise. It's funny to see some musicians doing what they always do, and exactly live up to their expectations: AMK's vinyl cut up, Achim Wollscheid's stutter cut-up or to see people applying their working method to the world of Noise, like Scanner or mnortham. Unfortunately there are no real surprises such as a string quartet version of TNB (except maybe the crazy almost acoustic improvisation by RLW and his children). It's an overwhelming project, by its size and quality both in music and art. - VITAL

Tribute to British anti-music heroes. This should be declared as an encyclopedia of the modern Noise underground - almost all the important artists are here. In the past many musicians have collaborated with TNB, but it seems that there were many more who just dreamt about it. It's useless to describe each particular track, just maybe necessary to say that almost all names will be familiar to you. - IEM
