By the time of Duke Ellington's engagement to write and record the music for Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder, he was an elder statesman of jazz. He'd performed in, and contributed music to, various movies before, but those were almost all short subjects or B-musicals, or confined to a handful of numbers (Belle of the Nineties) -- Anatomy of a Murder, by contrast, was a four-star feature film with a first-class cast (led by James Stewart, Lee Remick, and Ben Gazzara) and director. He rose to the occasion, creating a virtuoso jazz score -- moody, witty, sexy, and -- in its own quiet way -- playful. Ellington naturally subordinated his music to the action in the film, but "Midnight Indigo," "Flirtibird," "Happy Anatomy," and "Sunswept Sunday" (the latter highlighted by Jimmy Hamilton's clarinet theme) would have slotted in nicely in other contexts, on any of his standard albums.

If ever you had any doubts that Duke Ellington was one of the greatest geniuses of American music, one listen to this dark, scary and aurally majestic soundtrack should dispel any skepticism. This soundtrack comprises of layers upon layers of textures, musical patterns and ornamentation, spooky, jazzy, moody, brooding and mood-inducing sounds and textures (many played by Johnny Hodges, legendary Jazz sax player) I cannot even begin to describe, arrangements of almost mystical power and - ambience - above all, ambience.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·       RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)             In addition, stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters) . This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 3/4 x 2 inches in size)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
