Rather than a story ended, Dick Heckstall-Smith's debut album was in some ways a continuation of the stories written by his previous bands Colosseum and the Graham Bond Organisation.
And it sounds like a slightly heavier, slightly jazzier Colosseum.
Recorded with the assistance of several of his past associates from those two groundbreaking British blues-rock-jazz groups, including Mark Clarke, Dave Greenslade, Chris Farlowe, and Jon Hiseman (who both played drums and produced) of the just-disbanded Colosseum, as well as Graham Bond.
Pete Brown, who'd worked with several of the musicians who sprang from the Graham Bond Organisation crowd, co-wrote most of the songs with Heckstall-Smith; Chris Spedding and famed Elton John sideman Caleb Quaye contributed guitar.
Track Listing:
Side 1: Future Song / Crabs / Moses In The Bullrushourses / What The Morning Was After
Side 2: The Pirate's Dream / Same Old Thing
LABELS: NEAR MINT clean, bright and unmarked labels with just some light spindle traces on Side Two - probably played just a couple of times
VINYL Visual: NEAR MINT a (very) few light and non-sounding marks otherwise, the record shines like-new
VINYL Audio: NEAR MINT crystal clear, deep, rich and strong sound with complex rock/prog jazz arrangements - my one careful play-check at loud volume revealed no major audio issues of note - all in keeping with it's barely played status and it plays beautifully throughout
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT to (+) the fully laminated and deeply glossy sleeve is remarkably clean (seeing it's white) and it appears to have never been fully opened - the laminate still creaks (I have not opened it fully for my photos for fear of cracking the laminate on the internal spine) - it displays no wear to the edges or spine - where all text is clear and bold and has just a light touch of record impression on the back
INNER SLEEVE: VERY GOOD++ the lyric inner has some signs of handling and record impression rubbing to the bottom edges but there are no seam splits
