WITH IAN Gillan and Roger Glover out of the frame few thought that the band could continue with any degree of authority or, in deed, creativity. Amazingly they were wrong. 'Burn' was hailed as a work of genre defining importance. Blackmore's resolve was clear from the opening guitar salvo to take back the crown that had slipped and fallen from their fingers since the release of 'Machine Head'.
The title track is a magnificent statement of intent. The leading guitar motif is legend and the introduction of new boys David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes couldn't have been handled in a more impressive manner. This track is every part equal to if not more majestic then 'Smoke On The Water', streamlining the band into a battle ready cohesive force with an eye on the big prize. Coverdale's majestic blues based baritone acts like a magnificiant foghorn whilst Glenn Hughes takes the baton and runs for the hills - his soulful falsetto echoing in the valleys below.
And that's not all, as the material gets better and better. 'Might Just Take Your Life' is primal Purple with Blackmore spitting out fiery guitar licks like a GI Joe firing a sub machine gun. 'Lay Down Stay Down' is a cock rock classic whilst 'Sail Away' makes all smoochy and funky in a kind of way that suggested Hughs was given the space to indulge his Sly Stone fantasy. However the biggest nut to crack is 'Mistreated' a wonderfully evocative blues based ballad with Coverdale pitching himself squarely against Hughes and, for probably the first and last time, actually winning the race. Let us not forget the grand old gentleman of the team Richard Blackmore and his cunning arsenal of super hero guitar riffs - all deployed to maximum effect for possibly the last time before re-igniting his muse on 'Rainbow Rising'.

Vinyl: Superb clean and shiny condition. One or two faint spindle marks on label but no other signs of use. Grades as archive MINT!
Cover: Again, no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated single cover of notoriously thin paper stock - most copies are found damaged and worn but this one is brilliantly crisp and sharp. Looks like it stepped out of the factory yesterday. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. The spine is straight, stiff and totally uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 50 years after release. Grades as archive MINT!
