More scarce than ever, this is difficult to find, & a favorite to Collectors. Paul Quinichette was known throughout his career as the "Vice Prez" because he sounded so similar to Lester Young. The great Lester Young soundalike, is well-featured on this Mono Original Issue LP from 1956. He is heard on two numbers with a sextet led by trumpeter Gene Roland, playing two other songs with Roland's septet, and on eight selections with his own ten-piece group of Count Basie-Fame. Among the best are two numbers "Honeysuckle Rose," and "Pennies from Heaven," that feature Quinichette backed by Basie's rhythm section plus pianist Nat Pierce. There are not that many Paul Quinichette albums currently available, making this Orig LP a rather definitive look at the underrated, if not particularly original tenorman. While most of Young's other followers emulated his '30s style, Quinichette sounded like Lester Young of the 1950s then, present day.
