·       JUST IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING WHY THIS COVER WAS WITHDRAWN,  THE STORY GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS: THE CARTOON COVER APPARENTLY LAMPOONS THE STORY OF ODYSSEUS PASSING THROUGH THE STRAIT OF SCYLLA AND CHARIBDYS.  TO RESIST THE TEMPTATION OF THE SIRENS, HE HAD HIMSELF TIED TO THE SHIP’S MAST AND HIS EARS PLUGGED SO AS RENDER HIMSELF DEAF TO THE SIRENS’ SONG AND IMPERVIOUS TO THEIR IRRESISTIBLE CALL.  ALAS, IN THE ORIGINAL STORY, THE SAILORS UNDER HIS COMMAND WERE NOT AS FORTUNATE AND FALL PREY TO THE SIRENS.  HOWEVER, IN THE “JAZZ” RENDITION OF THE STORY, THE BEARDED SAILORS AGAIN FALL PREY TO THE TEMPTATION – BUT NOT TO THE TEMPTATION OF THE SIRENS!!!. INSTEAD, THEY GET ENCHANTED BY THE THREE (VERY MASCULINE-LOOKING) JAZZ PLAYERS PLAYING ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STRAIT, WHO APPARENTLY STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT FROM THE SIRENS. TO AVOID THE ACCUSATIONS OF SPOILING THE YOUTH OF ATHENS…ER…YALE (OR HARVARD)…BY PROMOTING THE (AHEM!) HOMOSEXUALITY (YEAH, LIKE THOSE 1950s FRATS AND BEATNIKS DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT), FANTASY APPARENTLY DECIDED TO PULL THE COVER AND REVERT TO THE ORIGINAL, BLACK & WHITE PHOTO VERSION. Tenor-saxophonist Dave Van Kreidt, a former member of Dave Brubeck's octet in the late '40s, had a reunion with the pianist, altoist Paul Desmond and bassist Bob Bates for this unusual session; Brubeck's new drummer Joe Morello made the group a quintet. Van Kreidt supplied all of the compositions (some of which are fairly complex), giving this set a sound very much different than the usual Brubeck Quartet outing. Interesting, classical-influenced music that predates the Third Stream movement.

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)            The album is believed to come with original Fantasy catalog brochure/insert.

(e)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (ACTUALLY, A LOOSE-FITTING PLASTIC BAGGY, TYPICALLY USED FOR SEALING RECORDS IN THE LATE '50s AND EARLY '60s)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)   (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
