WE PLAY-GRADE our records, we NEVER “visually grade” (we figure sellers who visually grade must be space aliens, since they can hear with their eyes?).  "Over-grading" thru the use of visual grading is the bane of the record collecting hobby.

ARTIST / TITLE / LABEL details:  Carl Perkins Sings "Blue Suede Shoes", "Movie Magg", "Sure to Fall" and "Gone Gone Gone" /  Sun Records, EP-115, w/ hard picture cover.

In the dead wax of both sides is etched a triangle symbol, after which on side A is etched: "15505" and "EP-18";  in the dead wax of the B-side, after the triangle symbol, is etched "15506" and "EP-19".

All of this information etched into the dead wax confirms this disc is the original pressing from 1958.

Description / Condition:  A 7" 45 RPM EP that plays VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD PLUS, in a VERY GOOD PLUS condition hard picture cover.  Very conservative grading.

PLEASE NOTE that there is one very short skip on "Sure to Fall" that appears to be caused by an original pressing flaw, a tiny "crater" (visible at the skip point). Otherwise, there is some surface noise at the entry tracks (beginning of both sides), and minor surface noise on the tracks themselves, hence the VG to VG+ grading for the record.

Under a strong light a handful of minor small scratches and a few light spots can be seen, none of which affect the overall grade. Use the "zoom" feature to see what we mean. 

A very enjoyable listen (identically-comparable to the, in our opinion, over-graded "VG+++/Near Mint" example that sold for $452.00 on eBay, closing date 7/30/10).

Clean labels (please see images). The timing of the tracks is listed under the word "Vocal" on the right side of the labels, as opposed to being listed next to or below the song titles themselves at the lower part of the labels. 

The hard picture cover has no seam splits, previous owner markings, musty odor or staple holes.  Laminated front cover.  Some very minor age toning/staining on the back (only) are the reasons we're grading this cover VERY GOOD PLUS instead of Near Mint.  Please see images.

Record LP and 45 CONDITION GRADING (GOLDMINE Magazine standards):

MINT (M) : Absolutely perfect in every way.  Played only to test, or still sealed.  Should be used sparingly as a grade, if at all.

NEAR MINT (NM):  A nearly perfect record.  Many sellers won't give a grade higher than this, implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect.

The record should show no signs of wear.  An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits, water stains or other similar defects. There should be no cut-out holes, saw marks, staples, or indentations -- all of these being signs of an overstock item (that is, returned from the retailer to the manufacturer or distributor, and later re-marketed at a discount).

The same should be true of any inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like (or else these should be graded separately).

Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a record shop and opened it.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) :  A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences.

Slight warps that do not affect the sound are ""OK"", but should be clearly pointed out.

The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.

Picture sleeves for 45’s and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation, staple holes or corner cut (that is, returned from the retailer to the manufacturer or distributor, and later re-marketed at a discount).

In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, the VG+ graded item would be Near Mint.  Very Good Plus records are highly acceptable to all but a few collectors.

VERY GOOD (VG) : Many of the slight defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel) that will affect the sound.

Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue). The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

However, a VG item DOES NOT have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.

GOOD (G), GOOD PLUS (G+):  Good does not mean Bad!  A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on an old styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white).

A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.

FAIR/POOR: Do we really need to discuss this?  Only the rarest of the rare items are even slightly acceptable in this shape, and even those sell for 1/10th the price of the same thing in VG or VG+
