Frequently cited as Caravan's most successfully realized album, IN THE LAND OF GREY AND PINK contains elements both of the band's roots in the Canterbury art rock scene and, in songs such as "Love to Love You," distinct traces of commercial leanings. Dragons, knights in armor, and utopian visions win a decisive victory, however, aided by a suite of lengthy and accomplished instrumental jams, making this release essential listening for any self-respecting prog-rock buff. Along with Soft Machine, Caravan were a leading exponent of what became known as "the Canterbury sound" - a concoction of styles including jazz, classical and traditional English influences.
