A novel idea, simulating "air checks" of well-known disc jockeys nationwide, gave birth to the "Cruisin'" series. More than just another set of "oldies" albums, the producers at Increase Records enlisted the services of various deejays to simulate actual broadcasts of their respective radio shows, including theme songs, station IDs, and commercials of both national and local nature. If you enjoy "air checks," this series of simulations should be in your collection.
"Cruisin'" originally started as series of LPs in June 1970, with the 1956 through 1962 volumes. 1955 and 1963 were added to the series in January 1972, and 1964 through 1967 were added to the LP set in September 1973.
PLEASE NOTE: The LPs on offer are the U.S. re-issues from the early eighties and due to copyright issues, some tracks may differ from the original 1970's releases. Years 1955 to 1962 were re-issued in 1983 and the remainder in 1984. To ensure you know exactly what is being offered, I have provided complete track listings for your information.
The CD versions were first released in March 1993, distributed through budget-line K-Tel Records, making several changes and omissions, and expanding the series to cover 1968 and 1969. An additional CD called "The Cruisin' Years" (CD# 1000) was issued in 1993. It is a compilation of tracks from several of the other releases. The 1970 CD and the Porky Chedwick CD were added in December 1995.
Since the CDs "abbreviated" the original series, my personal preference is for the LPs because their continuity is better. For example, on the 1955 CD, George Oxford refers to having played "I Got A Woman" by Ray Charles earlier in the show - as he DOES on the LP, but that track is omitted from the CD, making the reference less meaningful.
CRUISIN': THE FIFTIES & SIXTIES (A History Of Rock 'N' Roll Radio) is a wonderful and unique, nostalgic, record series on Increase Records. A year-by-year recreation of pop music radio during the years 1955 to 1967, on thirteen vinyl albums.
Each album is not just a collection of the top pop music of a particular year, but a total recreation by a top disc jockey (of that year) doing his original program via a major pop music station. That means actual commercials, promotional jingles, sound effects, newscast simulations and even record hop announcements, in addition to the original records themselves.
The series was produced with unprecedented attention to detail. One disc jockey, Dick Biondi of Chicago, called his old home town, Buffalo, New York, just to get an accurate ten-year-old weather report. Another, Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsburg of Boston, showed up in the studio carrying a suitcase full of chrome kazoos, cowbells, oogah horns and other noisemakers he'd used on the air in 1961. Then, after laying them out on a towel by the mike, much like a brain surgeon preparing to operate, "Woo Woo" wailed.
CRUISIN' producer Ron Jacobs monitored thousands of feet of tape, travelled over 10,000 miles and rooted through forgotten files and cluttered basements for old commercials, station promos and jingles. He also managed to get clearances for 84 different records, of which 42 are certified million-sellers, and all are from the Top 30 of their respective years. The disc jockeys who appear on the series were picked after a month of carefully researching a decade's issues of BILLBOARD, including tabulating all disc jockey mentions. The names were then cross checked with audience rating services and long-time radio expert Bill Gavin--all this just to determine with jocks on which stations represented each year most accurately.
These albums are real collectors items and together create a unique set of remarkable, historical recordings.
Note: Due to ebay restrictions of 12 pictures per listing, I have not been able to include a photo of Cruisin' 1967. Please contact me if you wish to see this sleeve.
