Description
Almost without exception, any Beatles cassette offered for sale on E bay is a re-issue from January 1972 onwards. What the description omits to tell you is that it is NOT a first release. First release Beatles cassettes ( with the exception of the rare Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road and Let It Be released in 1968, 1969 and June 1970 respectively) were issued in September and October, 1970, and carry different inlay designs to the reissues from January 1972 onwards. Due to this short period of first release issue, they are few in number, rare and rarely come up for sale. Essentially, EMI were experimenting in cassette artwork & design, in advance of a corporate standardised design, in a new music format, which they were wary to enter for fear of affecting lucrative vinyl sales.
One such example is here, the first UK release of "Collection of Beatles Oldies" in September, 1970. Black lettering on a white background on the spine and front, and are known as the "white inlays")
First release Beatles cassettes also had lime green paper labels, a 1&7/8 ips circular denotion on the spine, other Beatles albums advertising on the foldover, and the tracklisting on the inside of the inlay. Quite different from the reissues.
This UK first release example of "Collection of Beatles Oldies" of October 1970, lime green labels ( they look yellow in the photographs) is in superb condition, plays perfectly, is a beauty and looks hardly to have been used or played at all. See photos.
If you would like to know the definitive comprehensive history of the Beatles first release cassettes (including the "jewel in the crown" unique cigarette case design White Album cassette, a guide is available under my other items for sale.
