THE CHARLIE MINGUS JAZZ WORKSHOP - PITHECANTHROPUS ERECTUS
A highly presentable and very nice condition copy of this US 1st press jazz gem rarity with impressive MONO audio quality

1956 Charlie Mingus gem on cherished deep groove US Atlantic 1st press black label : overall very good plus (VG+) condition vinyl - thick, weighty and completely flat and in normal daylight gives off an impressive jet black sheen still. With close scrutiny under a bright light a few small wispy hairlines and very faint surface scuff marks come into view along with some small areas of slight vinyl "dulling" - all slightly more pronounced and detectable on side 2 but nothing feelable and all appearing to be surface only. To be precise I would grade the condition of the vinyl as "excellent" for side 1 and a solid "very good" for side 2. Excellent plus (EX+) condition 1st press Atlantic black labels with - virtually unmarked apart from just a few very small and extremely faint (barely detectable) spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each side Note the circular "deep groove" on each label - an identifier of very early pressings. Very good plus (VG+) condition front-side only laminated thick cardboard outer sleeve, with rigid & unscuffed edges (just a few tiny "nicks" on the bottom edge), near perfectly defined right angled corners with minimal rubbing on each (just a little more obvious scuffing at the bottom right corner, but still mild) and some mild surface storage/handling marks on the original "paste-on' on the reverse side, including a number of mild brown ageing "spots" (see photos). The spine remains rock solid with all spine text perfectly intact and the opening edges are firm with no fraying or feathering. All colours/art work remain beautifully intact on the front side and with great definition. Still highly presentable and fully functional. Very good plus (VG+) MONO audio quality with no skips, sticks, jumps, repeats, interference or distortion and any background crackle is light, at a minimum, and non-intrusive. The slight exception to this is towards the beginning of B2 where there is some occasional light clicking (I counted x20) accompanied by some sporadic light background crackle - nothing nasty but clearly audible. Again, to be precise I would grade the audio quality as "excellent" for side 1 and ranging from "very good to excellent" on side 2. Despite these minor glitches there is no doubt that every track on this copy remains a great listen - a truly rare and groundbreaking LP!

Note that I always insert the vinyl into a new plain white poly-lined inner sleeve in order to protect the original during postage, and separate this from the outer sleeve to prevent seam splits. I use thick cardboard stiffeners and take great care in my packaging to ensure as far as possible that these precious records reach their destination in exactly the same condition as when they leave me.
