Label/Format: Decca – Deep blue with boxed format, this 1970 album was never issued unboxed.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: SKL-R 5052.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. A very good weight for this album and the usual quality of a Decca record.

Rarity: Scarce, and getting harder to find all the time. Early copies of this album are highly sort after.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album, and my personal favourite by the UK ‘Canterbury’ progsters. Superb and melodic keyboard driven rock with wonderful long instrumental breaks, this is Caravan at their very best and can be enjoyed to the maximum via this very clean record, the perfect and definitive way to enjoy their music. A typically solidly-pressed Decca album with lovely sound, this copy appears played little and should please most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT. This is single format that has a Clarifoil laminated front, this covers all closed edges but only goes on to the back via the spine. It was printed in England by Robert Stace. This may appear cropped on the right edge, but I guarantee that is NOT the case. Cover trimming in manufacture can and does vary slightly on occasions, the definitive proof here is the right edge has the laminate end strip fully present and quite wide. If this has been trimmed this unprotected strip would have been cropped off and this simply has NOT happened.

Lamination & Front: Clean, clear and shiny with minimal traces of any dulling or friction rubs, just slight rim impression from the heavy pressed record. All is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters, and that is not so easy on this cover, Clarifoil is prone to lifting. Marks are few, fine and faint and this front has few creases, any present on the edges mostly as fine hairlines. The superb artwork retains super good looks and rich colour and freshness. I emphasise again, the right edge witih a close manufacture trim on the ‘you’ is purely as made and is guaranteed untampered with in any way.

Cover Back: A back that more often seen very grubby and ringworn than not. This is still clean with few marks or grubbiness. Minimal rim marks and barely any creases at all, one tiny and minor surface scuff near the bottom edge (but look hard). The laminate end line on the spine is ultra clean and totally solid. Both sides will take a fair amount of beating.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with a little mildish compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid laminate which remains white and clear.

Corners: All very crisp and sharp with any tip rubs tiny.

Cover Summary: A strong and attractive all-round example of this rather delicate early 70’s cover, one that will prove challenging to find much better. The thin card used means this is vulnerable to all forms of wear an this lovely cover should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT++. The original blue Decca lined inner has a sharp and crisp window and clear, intact lining. Mildly aged with some light gum browning on the seams that all remain intact and strong. Barely any creasing and attractive.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT++ with any surface trace marks ultra fine and few. Ultra faint hairlines seen critically under light that few 40+-year-old records will ever avoid. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with a lovely shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy played very little on all the evidence and almost certainly on quality equipment. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilaus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This progressive classic plays even above high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – a real hi-fi Decca recording that will make any worthy system sound fantastic. Barely any traces of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted and this is very fine pressing, so typical of Decca, always one of the most reliable and best labels. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
