Recorded during a turbulent period marked by shifting personnel, the sessions saw contributions from David Crosby, Clarence White and briefly Gene Clark, with Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman ultimately shaping the album’s cohesive vision. Produced by Gary Usher, the record blends psychedelia, folk‑rock, country, jazz and early electronic experimentation through the use of the Moog modular synthesiser. Featuring standout tracks such as “Goin’ Back” and “Wasn’t Born To Follow”, the album bridges the band’s jangly early sound with the country‑rock direction that would define their next era.
