An exceptional pressing of  'The Times They Are A-Changin', in SUPERB condition, with Rare MONO Textured Labels, 1st press cover and outstanding TOP AUDIO from start to finish!

The Times They Are a-Changin' is singer-songwriter Bob Dylan's third studio album, released in January 1964 by Columbia Records. Produced by Tom Wilson, it is the singer-songwriter's first collection to feature completely original compositions. The album consists mostly of stark, sparsely-arranged story songs concerning issues such as racism, poverty, and social change. The title track is one of Dylan's most famous; many felt that it captured the spirit of social and political upheaval that characterised the 1960s.

 Dylan began work on his third album on August 6, 1963, at Columbia's Studio A in New York City. Once again, Tom Wilson was the producer for the entire album. Dylan had, by the time of recording, become a popular, influential cultural figure. Eight songs were recorded during that first session, but only one recording of "North Country Blues" was ultimately deemed usable and set aside as the master take. A master take of "Seven Curses" was also recorded, but it was left out of the final album sequence.

Another session at Studio A was held the following day, this time yielding master takes for four songs: "Ballad of Hollis Brown", "With God on Our Side", "Only a Pawn in Their Game", and "Boots of Spanish Leather", all of which were later included on the final album sequence. A third session was held in Studio A on August 12, but nothing from this session was deemed usable. However, three recordings taken from the third session eventually saw official release: "master" takes of "Paths of Victory", "Moonshine Blues", and "Only a Hobo" were all included on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991 released in 1991.

 Sessions did not resume for more than two months. During the interim, Dylan toured briefly with Joan Baez, performing a number of key concerts that raised his profile in the media. When Dylan returned to Studio A on October 23, he had six more original compositions ready for recording. Master takes for "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" and "When the Ship Comes In" were both culled from the October 23 session. A master take for "Percy's Song" was also recorded, but it was ultimately set aside and was not officially released until Biograph in 1985.

The sessions for 'The Times They Are a-Changin' produced a large surplus of songs, many of which were eventually issued on later compilations. According to Clinton Heylin, "perhaps the two best songs, "Percy's Song" and "Lay Down Your Weary Tune", would not make the final album, failing to fit within the narrow bounds Dylan had decided to impose on himself."

 As Clinton Heylin wrote: "in less than six months [Dylan] had turned full circle from the protest singer who baited Paul Nelson into someone determined to write only songs that 'speak for me'... Dylan's ambitions as a writer for the page...may have been further fed at the end of December when he met renowned beat poet Allen Ginsberg, author of Howl and Kaddish." Dylan was already familiar with Ginsberg's work. By now, beat poetry and French symbolists had become an enormous influence on Dylan's work, as Dylan "passed from immediate folk sources to a polychrome of literary styles". In an interview taken in 1985, Dylan said that he didn't start writing poetry until he was out of high school: "I was eighteen or so when I discovered Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Frank O'Hara and those guys. Then I went back and started reading the French guys, Rimbaud and François Villon."

 Many critics took note of the stark pessimism on The Times They Are a-Changin', which NPR's Tim Riley later described as "'Masters of War' stretched out into a concept album" due to its "social preening and black-and-white moralism". As the years passed Critical respect for The Times They Are a-Changin' grow and grow, and it is now considered to be one of the pioneering albums of the 20th century, and a landmark in Dylan’s career.

TOP AUDIO - NEAR MINT 

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING: Yes – Fantastic! - NEAR MINT sound quality throughout!

This great record plays up to the visual and audio grading and beyond, with NEAR MINT sound. 

'The Times They Are a-Changin' is a complex and varied collection of music, and is also a relatively sensitive piece of vinyl, and hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex tracks. Most of the album is quiet and recorded with vocal and guitar only, making it ultra difficult to find an original pressing that doesn't sound heavily worn and distorted. This pressing has strong undistorted audio, with Super clear sound and absolutely minimal background static. There is certainly no dominant  interference, and NO loud pops or clicks, and certainly NO Distortion. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

Superb sound, every track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes. Some light occasional static only, and it is light and very occasional, and has to be expected with such and old and quiet album. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and virtual silence between the tracks. And finding a pressing with sound this clear is amazing. The extremly quiet "The Lonesome" is Crystal clear.

This vinyl is an absolute gem! It must be the clearest copy of 'The Times They Are a-Changin' I've heard.  'One too many Mornings' sings out with silence in the run ins and quiet areas. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound.

The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut MONO engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.

A great all round example of this classic vinyl. This is a great Audio pleasure and I would have to give the Audio at least a NEAR MINT grading.

Staggering first Ultra Rare MONO mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A great all round example of this great vinyl, and a highly collectable Dylan masterpiece.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING - NEAR MINT 

A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl is immaculate and has been little played. The record has great shine, with no scratches or hairline. On first inspection it looks completely unmarked. Only under intense light can I just about make out a couple of tiny  (ultra) light handling marks /  paper removal marks. Any minor surface marks or very light and non sounding, perhaps being caused by handing and sleeve removal. On the whole this is a really unbelievable example.

This rare UK MONO pressing gives a great early press listening experience for this classic album.

THE COVER 

This 1st press flip back cover is bright and clean, with little creasing, no tears or stains. The opening edges are very square and un frayed. The back cover is nice and clean, with NO ring wear, which is very unusual for these covers, just some yellowing and a bit of wear to the bottom right flip back, as clearly seen in the images.

The Spine is  true and slightly flattened, but and shows little wear / rubbing to the corners. The spine text is totally intact. 

A great all round example of this rare cover, I would have to give it a modest VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT grading.!!

THE LABELS -  NEAR MINT CONDITION

Superb TEXTURED MONO labels, stating Made In England. Minimal spindle traces. Absolutely no marks or writing what so ever, and NO brush marks that these labels seem prone to. Great all round examples!

THE INNER

Original Made In England poly lined inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition.

This is a TOP example with very little wear. There are NO splits to the sides. There are NO tears to the front or opening edges, which are nice and crisp. There is a slight impression of the album, but it is very faint..

All in all a really stunning and ultra rare example. Comes of course with a new white inner sleeve.

A complete UK MONO Label Vinyl of this early Dylan classic in decent condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound.

The cover is hard to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is a lovely example. Finding a great cover like this, with a thick pressed piece of MONO vinyl, fantastic!. 

Finding one with audio performance like this, with a vinyl that is virtually unmarked,  with the Ultra Rare 1st press MONO labels makes this an extremly rare collectable fro the early 1960's, and one of the true pioneering records of the 20th century, and of Dylan's career!

V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.

V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch.Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, etc.
