Description
This record contains the mix of Love Me Do with Ringo on drums. At the time (1964) this version was found only on U.K. singles. Supposedly this is the first Beatles non-authorized disc:
“Before 1980, the only time the "Ringo on drums" version appeared in the United States was in April 1964, on an album of dubious legality called The Original Greatest Hits on the Greatest Records label (GRC-1001). This album hit the stores packaged as if it was just another Beatles sound-alike group like the Liverpools or the Manchesters, because it only had the outlines of Beatles-style wigs on the cover. But it contained the actual Beatles recordings, all dubbed from records. And it contained "Love Me Do" dubbed from a Canadian 45 as the first song on side 2. It had not yet been released by Tollie in the United States, and even then the Introducing the Beatles LP with "Love Me Do" on it (as opposed to "Please Please Me") was very rare.”
Though nothing on the sleeve of this record mentions the Beatles, the images on the front and song titles were enough to tip off most people. As the story goes, Capitol Records stopped distribution of the album almost immediately after it hit the stores.
