This is the monumental Teldec set of Bach’s complete cantatas on 72 LPs, in 36 individual cloth boxes, accompanied by the complete scores, and a wealth of written material on the background and musical structure of the works, with photographs.
As can be seen from the images below this collection is in many ways a lifetime’s listening on its own. The recordings were made between 1973 and about 1981 under the musical direction of Nikolaus Harnancourt or (from time to time) Gustav Leonhardt.
The pressings are superb quality German pressings and the playing surface of these LPs is extemely quiet. I have visually graded every single one of the 72 LPs and would grade the set at near mint overall. Most look unplayed. I have randomly play-graded a number of the LPs and found the sound quality to be superb. Very occasionally I saw a faint mark which upon playing proved to be non-sounding. Please note there is one mark, on volume 11 (cantata 42) which causes around 5 minutes of very quiet ticks. Apart from this there is nothing to concern the buyer.
The boxes are in excellent condition. The cloth covers vary slightly in colour, but this presumably reflects the different times they were made. The scores are printed in large format booklets inside each box. One set only has a loose-leaf score which may have been photocopied. There are also other booklets of notes giving musical analysis, illustrated with manuscript pages etc. Plenty to read and plenty to listen to!
This is a superb set. These boxes were available individually and are sometimes seen on ebay and elsewhere as individual items. However it is extremely unusual to have the chance to purchase the whole lot together. The starting price here works out at just over £1 per disc with of course the complete score and other written materials as free extras.
