Even after his death, Paul Butterfield's music didn't receive the accolades that were so deserved. Outputting styles adopted from Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters among other blues greats, Butterfield became one of the first white singers to rekindle blues music through the course of the mid-'60s. His debut album, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, saw him teaming up with guitarists Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, with Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Mark Naftalin playing organ. The result was a wonderfully messy and boisterous display of American-styled blues, with intensity and pure passion derived from every bent note. In front of all these instruments is Butterfield's harmonica, beautifully dictating a mood and a genuine feel that is no longer existent, even in today's blues music. Each song captures the essence of Chicago blues in a different way, from the back-alley feel of "Born in Chicago" to the melting ease of Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy" to the authentic devotion that emanates from Bishop and Butterfield's "Our Love Is Drifting." "Shake Your Money Maker," "Blues With a Feeling," and "I Got My Mojo Working" (with Lay on vocals) are all equally moving pieces performed with a raw adoration for blues music. Best of all, the music that pours from this album is unfiltered...blared, clamored, and let loose, like blues music is supposed to be released. A year later, 1966's East West carried on with the same type of brash blues sound partnered with a jazzier feel, giving greater to attention to Bishop's and Bloomfield's instrumental talents.

An absolutely extraordinary album from beginning to end. Indeed, an album that should appear far higher than it does in so-called "expert" lists of the greatest albums ever made. So why doesn't it?

At the most basic level, this was a multi-racial band that existed in an era when such a thing simply wasn't the norm, with a band leader who was white but who played the black man's music with an authenticity very few white players had been able to muster - either before or since. In fact, perhaps even using the term "authentic" severely understates just how important Paul Butterfield's harmonica playing was to the sound of the band, being the dominant feature of such major musical statements as Born In Chicago, Blues With A Feeling and Mellow Down Easy.

But that hardly pays the remaining members of the band the due credit they deserve for also producing the amazing sound throughout this album. The Butterfield Blues Band was very much a collective and in that respect, the drumming of Sam Lay and rhythm guitar work of Elvin Bishop can't be overstated. Then there was Mike Bloomfield. Those familiar with Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited album would know what an incredible talent the man was from songs such as Tombstone Blues and the title track. And the searing nature of his playing was further unleashed on this album on tracks such as Got My Mojo Working, Shake Your Money-Maker and Look Over Yonders Wall. Quite simply, there has not, nor will there ever be a guitar talent as unique as Bloomfield was and this album captured him at the top of his game.

Not just a watershed moment for blues purists, the debut album by the Butterfield Blues Band stands as one of the most important rock and roll albums ever made, an album who's influence continues to resonate with new generations who discover it - over 50 years after it first appeared on vinyl. If you love rock and roll and don't own it, then your music collection has a major hole in it and it's a hole that needs to be filled.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band's debut set the tone for the electric blues rock of that decade. At a time when Motown and the Beatles ruled the pop charts, here came an interracial band from roughly the same generation who were ignoring those sounds in favor of playing authentic, rough-edged, moaning blues. That the group got any notice at all is a testament to their prowess as musicians. That they pointed a way to the future by delving into the music of the past, attests to their importance as trailblazers. Even though the band itself remained faithful sound of their Chicago blues heroes like Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters, one can hear the beginnings of the late 60s and early 70s jam band scene, particular in the virtuoso (but still bluesy) soloing of guitarists Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, but also in the general feeling that what the group was playing came from purely from the gut. Butterfield's harp playing is as fiery as anything this side of Little Walter, and the rhythm section is both funky and flawless.

Plain and simple, there just is not a weak track on the album. The album opener, "Born in Chicago" is one of the best-written blues songs of the era and deserves its current status as a standard of the genre. Then there are the convincing, heartfelt covers of artists like Elmore James, Little Walter, and Muddy Waters (Sam Lay sounded exact - I mean, EXACTLY - replication of Muddy on "Got My Mojo Working"), which added a youthful energy to the old classics and helped make the blues relevant for a whole new generation of musicians, changing the direction of popular music for decades to come.
