Label Condition: Both in supreme condition, especially for a vintage mono record, side two has a mere couple of faint traces with barely any hint of any at all on one. Simply compare with most seen, this record is truly stunning.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Rarer in per se stereo but much harder to find mono copies in top condition. Hardly played monos that include the 1967 date-code inner, fully laminated first design cover and the book are harder still.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the lesser-mentioned ‘classics’ from this famous year in music. Originally formed as a 1920s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their nichè elsewhere. This debut album, dedicated to King Kong, from the British kings of satire of this time. A brilliant album, my personal favourite of several they made and I never tire hearing it. It includes some absolutely wonderful songs, witty, catchy and, of course, a little eccentric, all are priceless gems – the Bonzos at their absolute best. Comedy and satire are blended with zany jazz, pop and psychedelia, the humour possibly overshadowing what a talented jazz band they were. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became relatively popular in the late 60’s and even had regular TV appearances on programmes like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’ (that I remember well). They even had a hit single later with ‘The Urban Spaceman’. The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué – all in typically ‘British’ style. Wacky, zany, inventive and original, this is great entertainment and this vintage mono copy does it maximum justice. An early blue label copy with the first fully laminated cover, it appears hardly played and offers supreme sound. The scarce book also in lovely clean condition, this so often missing or damaged, it adds the icing on the cake.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single fully laminated cover that has the first design back that was later changed. Slightly later ones were only laminated on the front and the main picture on the back was only around half the size. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and has the correct LBL Mono prefix. Also the Polydor style date coded inner sleeve is included along with the scarce book.

Lamination – Front & Back: Only marked down a little for some laminate creasing, but retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of any dulling or lifting – just a fine sliver down the front spine edge that hardly even shows. Most of any creasing on the entrance edges, but with a mainly white background, these show less than they could have done. A small few edge tone spots but overall, any blemishes are few and light and this vintage cover has aged quite well.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both mainly smooth, straight with minimal traces of wear, a very small central scuff trace on the top with a little rubbing to the bottom right end.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening, even viewed end-on modestly light and this guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solidly laminated, quite thin but still straight, any compression light. A little generally light crinkle being critical, all text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: A smallish rub on the bottom right, little else with very fine shape retained on the others.

Cover Summary: Just enough to gently remind of age, but for a cover around 47+ years old, this is very fine. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the polylined white inner has aged a little with the usual darkening. Folded a little off-square which is a little more unusual for inners. The window circles neat and the lining clear, a little creasing and minor crinkle. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this has the 097 (September 1967) date code making this elusive mono early.

The Book: EXCELLENT(++): a 12-page black and white book that was only included with early copies and quickly withdrawn, it is quite rare and many copies fails to have it. The pages secured with the two original staples, these being secure and unloosened with no tarnishing or rust. This has aged little and has minimal traces of usage or wear, minor handling traces on the inside back cover, little else. The lack of creasing and page damage are massive pluses for a book. The pages practically all razor sharp and neat as is the whole book in general. Few examples will better this and it’s inclusion a major bonus as many got lost, torn or never included in the first place.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and a very strong case for grading Mint(-), this is a sensational looking mono record with sound to match. Ultra clean with superb shine and very solidly pressed, just the type of barely played record the discerning collector wants. When a 1967 record looks like this, especially in mono, they are very special, this was rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs, being a little to ‘out-there’ for most at the time. Any surface blemishes are bordering on minuscule with just the odd small faint hairline or surface trace. Special mention about these incredibly fresh playing surfaces, they have NO inner bag rash or dulling at all. The labels wonderfully impressive and quite honestly, the lustre of this record comes close to reminding of new. For those, like me, who really enjoy the more wonderful and unique bands and their zany weirdness, this is unmissable. Only for the fact I own this myself means it is available to offer.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant mono copy plays even above it’s impressive visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on any mono record), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and this offers a quite different presentation of the music compared to the stereo. Any unwanted sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted. This was a real pleasure to play-grade, I really love this album and it was a delight to hear with the vintage mono mix. Nothing spoiled my pleasure when play-grading this zany classic. The songs quickly become addictive and it can be argued, the Bonzos were never quite this brilliant again. That said, the first four albums are superb, but this one the ultimate for me. This record will prove near impossible to find like this again in mono and it merits my highest recommendation.

End Piece: A band musically more talented than given credit for and their music and satire broke new grounds at the time. A little crazy and eccentric and with the legendary Viv Stanshall in line-up who could be surprised? A superb record and sound, a very fine book and a clean, only quite gently aged, but ultimate first-made cover – vo-dowdy-oh.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
