Description
Hello Bee Gees fans and record collectors. I don't have a lot of information about this record as I can't find anything written about its existence or any previous copies sold so I suspect it's one of a kind and I have no idea of its value. But we will soon find out. I found it in a charity shop in Hammersmith, West London many years ago, close to where all the major labels including Polydor used to have their offices.
This is a 10 inch, single-sided, metal acetate record. On the playing side there is a plain white, slightly glossy label with "Words" and Casserole Music printed on it with a typewriter (you can see the letters are indented), there are no etchings or matrix numbers. On the other side there is no label so you can see that as well as the central spindle hole there are three other holes drilled through the record, presumably to hold it in place on the cutting machine. Between these holes the word "ALLIED" is etched twice, along with New York U.S.A. No artist name or date is written on the record. Both sides have patches of mould that can probably be cleaned off, along with other light marks and signs of age.
Knowing how fragile acetates are I have only played it once just to confirm my hunch that it is the Bee Gees performing their 1968 single "Words", and although the playback quality is very bad - lots of crackle and hiss and jumps, thanks to a slight bend in the metal. I can confirm that my hunch was correct.
I will send it to you in the same plain brown paper sleeve that it was in when i found it. I used high quality mailers with stiffeners.
