Label Condition: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Just one modest spindle mark on side two, any others are beyond tiny and faint and this record appears hardly even played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Stereo copies of this record are scarce and even more so when including the book. Copies hardly even played with clean, attractive covers are even harder to find.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Originally formed as a 20s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their nichè elsewhere. This was the follow-up to the wonderful Gorilla debut album from the British kings of satire and is another gem. A very fine stereo original and it includes some absolutely wonderful songs, witty, catchy and somewhat eccentric and all are priceless. Comedy and satire are blended with zany jazz-rock, pop and strange tales. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became quite popular in the late 60’s and even had regular TV appearances on programs like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’ and even had a hit single with ‘The Urban Spaceman’. The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué and the humour was typically ‘British’. Wacky, zany, inventive and original, this is great entertainment and this is another superb copy – nice to hear a stereo copy too, most I see are well-worn mono copies – minus the book. This is not quite blemish-free, but it will take some beating for looks and sound.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high. Unlike ‘Gorilla’, this cover was totally unprotected by laminate, not only that, this is a gatefold format with a single thickness front. With a heavy record inside all these years, few will be free of ringwear, rubbing and front-side creasing.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a gatefold format, unlaminated with matt, smooth surfaces. It has the LBL Mono number with the original manufacturer’s ‘STEREO’ sticker below it on the back to cover the word ‘mono’. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Front: Great artwork, eccentric, strange and weird – they do not make them like this anymore. A couple of blemishes stops a higher grading, but this to my eyes looks better than Excellent. A sticker mark from the past has left a tiny surface tear near the top (look hard) and minor surface ripple near it – this only really shows under light. Also a crease near the top right corner area, this fairly light with modest visual impact. Being single card, few of these 43-year-old covers will avoid some creasing at the very least – this being almost the only one of any real note on the entire cover – just a faint one inside on the same area. Still very clean, fresh and attractive and clearly modestly handled and well protected. No rubbing, scuffing or indentations and rarely have I seen this or similar covers looking a great deal better. The artwork is very dark with no fading and I barely even see a fingermark trace to the flat matt surface. Yes, the small sticker blemish may concern the highly discerning collector, but the positives far outweigh this minor negative – but you decide.

Cover Back: A very impressive back with little to fault, a hint of burring on the fragile bottom edge, but again, few will ever show less. The lack of grubbiness, rubbing, and especially ringwear is a huge bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Absolutely superb with more strangely surreal artwork and lyrics included here. Both faces looking almost as made bar a very fine and faint crease on the top corner.

Top Edges: Neat and mostly sharp with little thickening or burring, even the fragile front.

Bottom Edges: Slightly thickening and light burr traces in places. Besting the traditional storage edges, again, few will ever avoid a little and most will show considerably more.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and no feathering. Minimal traces of any thickening or burring, both are guaranteed untrimmed. Record is stored on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Very delicate and fragile being only single thickness, most will split and tear and at least weaken. This has NOT happened on this one and is superb condition as I hope my close-up picture shows. This is very solid and straight with barely any wear and with minimal traces of any compression. Most flatten totally and again this has not happened on this one. Folded very squarely so the edges are flush and almost dead parallel. All text is perfect and unworn which can never be taken for granted on these types. I can hardly imagine ever finding this spine better.

Corners: All quite neat and exceptional given the format, any tip rubbing is tiny and light, with just a little thickening to the tips on the right – this being quite critical and all retain very fine shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A great cover that looks really nice. Of course I wish the sticker trace and tiny surface pull were absent, but sticker issues are all part of vintage cover history, and non-laminates often have some evidence as such. Still here, it is pretty minor and light and little detracts from what is still an impressive, and fragile cover. Not for the perfectionist, but I still feel most collectors will enjoy it.

The Book: EXCELLENT: a black and white matt-finished book still held together strongly with the two original staples that have not tarnished. Matt black covers are highly prone to showing any fingermarks readily (as are the pages) and this shows some, but far from excessive, on the front and lesser so on the back with minimal traces inside. The pages inside especially, are very clean and look superb. It lies dead flat with no humidity ‘bowing’. All 12 pages are devoid of creasing or grubbiness and usage appears modest. This scarce booklet that was NOT included with all originals and remains quite elusive and intact, neatly looking examples make the set extra special.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): little real wear but some creasing. This is Polydor-style inner with two crisp window circles and the lining clear, if a little crinkled. Mild age discolour but all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this being critical, barely any marks but with light inner bag rash that has NO effect on sound whatsoever. Polydor lined inners often cause this light dull patterning on the record’s surface, this seen under light, in most-all cases (unless ultra severe) it has NO effect on sound as is the case here. In terms of severity, this is about 2 to 3 out of 10 (so minor and showing little). This usually happens when the record has been left undisturbed for many years, that being the positive news of course. Blue Liberty records seem very prone to this and I have yet to find a copy of Captain Beefheart’s ‘Strictly Personal’ on this label without any ’bag rash’ at all. In terms of real marks or ageing, this has little and this record looks hardly even played with very clean and impressive playing surfaces and pressed on quite thick vinyl. Like the cover, not for the perfectionist, but in real terms, this super record is probably undergraded and will please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarcer stereo version plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. The stereo imagery is impressive and adds to the zany effects. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and overall, is a very fine, clean pressing. The only surface sound, this within the pressing, was noted VERY briefly on side two, lasting a mere couple of three seconds – that apart – the entire record plays with fantastic sound. Few copies will match or outperform this first blue-label pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Practically nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – I am a huge Bonzos fan. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: A band musically more talented than given credit for and their music and satire broke new grounds here at the time – but not to everyone’s taste of course – they were a little crazy and eccentric and with the legendary Viv Stanshall in line-up who could be surprised? A very nice all-round copy with blemishes too all the parts being few and light – given the vintage, it sets a very high standard for sure.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
