The classic Marley album, the one that any fair-weather reggae fan owns, Legend contains 14 of his greatest songs, running the gamut from "I Shot the Sheriff" to the meditative "Redemption Song" and the irrepressible "Three Little Birds." Some may argue that the compilation shortchanges his groundbreaking early ska work or his status as a political commentator, but this isn't meant to be definitive, it's meant to be an introduction, sampling the very best of his work. And it does that remarkably well, offering all of his genre-defying greats and an illustration of his excellence, warmth, and humanity. In a way, it is perfect since it gives a doubter or casual fan anything they could want. Let's face it, the beauty and simplicity of Marley's music was as important as his message, and that's captured particularly well here.

Legend is the twelfth album by Bob Marley and the Wailers, and the second posthumous album, released in 1984 by Island Records, catalogue BMW 1 in the United Kingdom and A1 90169 in the United States. It is a greatest hits collection of singles in its original vinyl format, and the best-selling reggae album of all-time, with over 14 million copies sold in the United States and approximately 25 million copies sold globally. In 2003, the album was ranked number 46 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Dave Robinson managing director of Island was the executive producer of the album but is not credited on the artwork.

It contains all ten of Marley's Top 40 hit singles in the UK up to the time, plus three songs from the original Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston in "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and "Get Up, Stand Up," along with the closing song from the album Uprising, "Redemption Song." Marley enjoyed fewer chart hits in the United States, "Exodus," "Waiting in Vain," "Could You Be Loved" and "Buffalo Soldier" the only ones included on this collection. Of the original tracks, only four date from prior to the Exodus album.

The cassette tape release of the album featured two extra songs, "Punky Reggae Party," the b-side to the "Jamming" single, and "Easy Skanking" from the Kaya album. A second generation compact disc remastered by Barry Diament appeared in 1990 on the Tuff Gong label. Although the disc includes the same 14 songs, the tracks are in their original album lengths rather than the edited versions for single release.

On February 12, 2002, the expanded 14-track edition with songs at album lengths were remastered for compact disc with a bonus disc consisting of 1984-vintage remixes for extended dance club singles and dub versions. In 2010, Legend was made available as downloadable content for Rock Band. However, it was released without "Get Up, Stand Up", which was later included on Rock Band 3.

Legend holds the distinction of being the second longest-charting album in the history of Billboard magazine. Combining its chart life on the Billboard 200 and the Top Pop Catalog Albums charts, Legend has had a chart run of 992 non-consecutive weeks, surpassed only by The Dark Side of the Moon at 1574 weeks. As of July 2013, the album has sold 11,374,000 copies in the US since 1991 when SoundScan started tracking album sales, making it the No. 9 best-selling album of the Nielsen SoundScan era. As of the issue date of September 28, 2013, the album has charted on the Billboard 200 for 285 non-consecutive weeks.

In the United Kingdom, Legend has sold 2,826,912 copies as of June 2009, making it the 26th biggest selling album of all time in that country, although to date it has apparently only been certified platinum six times in the UK denoting 1,800,000 copies shipped out.
