Label/Format: CBS - intense orange matt format with rough textured surfaces. Also with the early 33 speed indicator, later changed to 33 1/3 (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very few spindle marks that are mainly light and only show under angled light. A couple of them are long, but most are fine.

Cat Number: 62193.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. A very impressive heavy record.

Rarity: Moderate: but clean very early examples are far harder, especially those in mono with so many ruined by unforgiving record players and tracking weights of the era.

Brief Info: The world’s most famous folk-poet’s second album originally issued way back in 1963. Without doubt one of his greatest and most powerful acoustic albums, now including all original material bar two songs. This a very early mono example with very clean sound and attractive cover. The girl on the front was his then girlfriend, Suze Rotolo. This in age-defying condition and very well preserved, it should delight most fans of this legendary folk master.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front lamination, this covers all the closed folds and ends on the back on three large flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and unprotected and is made with thicker card than the front. Printed and made in England and uncredited.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity, it has no lifting of note and only has a small few edge, mainly fine surface creases. Little in the way of dulling and only very fine surface marks seen under light. Little detracts from the beauty of this vintage Dylan cover.

Cover Back: Again impressive for it’s considerable age with any discolouration or marks very few and light. Hardly any creasing to the main matt panel with no ring wear or rubbing. The flipbacks are also very neat and crisp, all have avoided lifting and retain clean ends with minimal traces of any burring. The top left corner has a small tip crease but little else.

Top Edge: Smooth and devoid of wear, a little natural bowing where laminate tries to contact over time.

Bottom Edge: Almost as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear at all and guaranteed untrimmed. The back is a little thickened and for certain, made with thicker card than the front. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Almost made and very clean indeed. Solid, mainly straight with minimal compression. This fully laminate protected which is smooth and unscuffed, all text pristine perfect and very well centred as seen in my picture.

Corners: As stated above, a small tip crease on the spine top but only on the back. That apart, all corners are neat and crisp with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this famous 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better in this very early-made form. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner that has aged little. A little crinkle or mild creasing but two immaculate window circles and clear lining. All edges unsplit with repairs. This is British patented with ‘FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by lovely clean, fully focused mono sound. Any surface marks very few, fine and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. A copy that has more than survived the harsh mono era, this is near exceptional and it should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful real vintage CBS record plays up to, and most-all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little, and this is predominately an acoustic set. With no loud passages for any blemishes to hide, a top pressing and lightly played record is essential for maximum pleasure and this easily makes the grade. Few copies will outperform this heavy ‘33’ pressing significantly I feel sure. Clear, focused and sharp, the man himself could almost be in the room with you. Both channels are clean with no ‘mono’ noise from either channel when played with stereo equipment, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
