Brian John "B. J." Cole (born 17 June 1946) is an English pedal steel guitarist, who has long been active as a session and solo musician.
Coming to prominence in the early 1970s with the band Cochise, Cole has played in many styles, ranging from mainstream pop and rock to jazz and eclectic experimental music, but has never forgotten the instrument's roots in country music.
Through his varied and extensive session work and long career as a performer, he has come to be regarded as Britain's pre-eminent pedal steel guitarist – indeed, one of the greatest in the world. Cole also plays lap steel and dobro.
Cole grew up in Enfield, attending Chase Side primary school and Chace secondary school for boys.
He became interested in music in his teens, his first major inspiration being The Shadows. Cole initially learned to play guitar, but became disillusioned with the instrument, conscious of the number of talented guitarists that were already active on the music scene.
Performances by the American duo Santo & Johnny aired on the Perry Como show introduced him to the exotic and unusual sound of the steel guitar, and in 1963, he traded in some toy trains to buy his first lap steel – a Dallas Rangemaster.
Around two years later, Cole first became aware of the pedal steel guitar, and soon acquired his first instrument, a Fender 1000.
What had been an enthusiasm now became a passion: Cole began to play in bands in his free time and to become actively involved in the music scene, landing his first ‘proper’ session in 1968; this was for Albert Lee, work which was included on the album Black Claw & Country Fever, released much later, in 1991.

The Vinyl
On initial visual inspection the vinyl looks absolutely superb, Just like it has just come from vthe shop in my opinion, and I can't see or feel any scratches or marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops at all! Any marks that could possibly be seen would be light whypsy surface scuffs and sleeve removal type only.. , This lays perfectly flat on the turntable and are free from any warping. (Note! I have double checked this) The vinyl looks superb, still retaining its original glossy sheen from new. (no) deep needle scratches or marks that would cause any loud constant clicks/ticks or pops at all!
The Audio Quality
I have played the vinyl prior to listing on a top system at very loud volume! The audio is superbe cristal clear and very vibrant throughout! Top audio seperation on all frequencies only heard like this on early original 1st pressings! Importantly there were no loud constant clicks/ticks, pops or any jumps truly awesome and very rare for a 1st pressing. The audio is graded at very Near as Mint in my opinion!
PLEASE NOTE! I always add this disclaimer! I have played this album prior to listing as usual and have given my honest opinion on the audio quality. Please remember this is a 42 years old original vinyl (not a reissue) Please allow for the odd interference/static/crackle/tick but importantly nothing consistant through out the audio! Please remember that this would have been originally played on a system that is 42 years old!
All indications i.e. that this vinyl has (not) been overplayed and in fact looks barely ever played in my personal opinion, at least no more than a handful of times in my opinion and the audio quality superbe on all frequencies.
The labels
This features the "United Artist" labels. These are superbe I can't see any spider marks at all on the labels, (even when angled to the light) and little if (no) spindle ware! This vinyl unplayed in my personal opinion!
The Record Sleeve
This is the original plain white paper sleeve, non poly lined and patented. No splits or tears. The vinyl is now always stored seperately from the sleeve.
The cover
The original 1st issue laminated front only cover is absolutely superbe! Rarely seen in decent very near mint condition like this one. There are (no) edge splits or tears. The spine is lovely and square A truly superbe example rarely seen like this.! No real nasty creases or in deed any real nasty imperfections. Any imperfections or indents are very minor and are not noticed unless looked for in my opinion. Must be at least Excellent Plus to near as mint in my opinion rarely ever seen like this after 42 years!
