Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a very small few fine, light spindle marks. The labels state ‘MADE IN HOLLAND’, this record I am sure was pressed in the UK, possibly using Dutch-made labels. The reason for this is seen on the matrix numbers listed below. The pressing code for UK-made Polydor/Phonogram records is 420 (as both sides of this record have. Dutch pressing use the 670 code. Matrixes do not lie and are pretty much definitive, so as far as I am concerned, this record is British.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Fantastic follow-up to the classic pop-psych debut, and largely carrying on the same. Comparisons to the Beatles, at the absolute peak of their powers were made for their early works, and true there are strong similarities. Forget those commercial disco workouts of the mid-1970s, early Bee Gees albums were nothing like that at all – these earlier albums up to around 1972 are known as the first-phase Bee Gees area. This has stunning vocal harmonies, classic rock, pop and psychedelia. The brothers Gibb were all still teenagers when their debut album was issued, Maurice and Robin (17) and Barry (19), it’s almost unbelievable to take in when you hear these twelve, mostly original written songs. If this classic album eluded you all those years ago (it certainly did me until fairly recent years), this must be heard and I promise and even guarantee, you will be captivated by this beautiful second album. All the Bee Gees albums up to 1969’s Odessa are essential, and ‘Idea’ was certainly up there with their very best – this a very fine example that does it strong justice. One or two sporadic light ticks, but wonderful clean distortion-free sound and lovely fully laminated cover – the record appears very little played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, includes the Polydor polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is a beautiful fresh looking cover, highly revealing and seldom seen this fine. Made with very thin card, which often means major laminate issues and creasing which this has largely avoided. The laminate both sides retains superb shine and clarity with any dulling little and light. A little seen under light round the thick record rim area, but few will show less. Adhesion can be a major factor for this album, and being so dark, any major lifting ruins the appearance considerably. This has barely any lifting blisters on either side, just a tiny one on the front bottom right corner tip. Tiny ‘spotting’ on the front which is natural and rarely avoided at very best, a hundred per cent pristine adhesion in manufacture is a really tough challenge. Any creases are very fine and few, most confined to the edges as fine hairline types with a couple or three gentle light half moons. Even the fine exposed strips on the opening edges where the laminate ends naturally short are clean and unworn. Both graphics are fantastic and retain immense vibrant colour, totally unfaded or aged. The deep purple backdrop to the front is incredible intense and looks magnificent.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still largely straight, smooth without wear.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen more critically viewed end-on, record enters on this edge, again I reiterate just how thin this card is. The back edge a little longer than the front in manufacture.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine: solid, straight with any compression very little and ligh, the ends lightly nipped in manufacture. All text perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also superbly centred. Even this spine’s laminated surface retains an amazing shine and is totally unscuffed.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint and all retain excellent or better shape with no bashes or noteworthy dinks.

Cover Summary: A very attractive all-round example of this classic vintage cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better. One that retains impressive freshness and excellent good looks. Given the great age this highly revealing cover has more than stood the test of time and I am more than convinced it has been cover-protected for most of it’s time. This impressive example should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or close to. Only marked down for modest natural darkening of the paper. It has two pristine window circles and very clear, fresh lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is date coded 108 (October 1968).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this being somewhat critical, this has a couple of tiny stylus marks that have a couple of light clicks each, but not a great deal else to fault, this record plays superbly for most of its entirety. An impressive clean record that has impressive shine and few other visual blemishes other than very fine surface trace seen under light. Heavily pressed with deep grooves, this appears little played and was very enjoyable to play-grade. Visually a very fine, very early record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage second album plays even above its generally impressing visual grading with little to fault bar the aforementioned minor couple or three light clicks from the two tiny marks. It offers strong, distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on any record this considerable age, especially Bee Gees titles with their complex vocals that often suffer distortion and clipping which this has totally avoided. All frequencies here are sharp, clear and fully focused with no tracking issues*. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and equally detailed sound. Beautifully produced with real hi-fi quality sound, this stereo version has great depth, warmth and definition. The songs are addictively catchy and memorable, these 1960s Bee Gees albums up there with the very, very best. Any surface sounds (crackle or noise) barely even registered and a copy I enjoyed immensely. Okay a few ultra brief tiny reminders of you are listening to a 48-year-old record, but finding one of these without the tiny blemish or two will prove so, so difficult. One to please many collectors and worthy of high recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
