The jewel in the Beau Brummels' crown, Triangle was an unexpected departure from the band's earlier hit-making formula -- and demonstrated Ron Elliott's growing maturation as a songwriter. All the band's signature styles (folk, country swing, and Brit-pop) are still heard in the mix, but the tunes here assume an added aura of mysticism. Buried commercially by the likes of Sgt. Pepper, Triangle shared its premise of songs loosely united by a common theme -- in this case, a ruminative dream cycle (though to call Triangle a concept album might be overstating the case). The exquisite "Magic Hollow," graced by Van Dyke Parks' delicate harpsichord, was surely the LP's highlight. Plucked as a single, it barely dented the charts, yet remains one of the most beautiful tunes in the entire Brummels canon. The album's first five songs -- "Are You Happy," "Only Dreaming Now," "Painter of Women," "Keeper of Time," and "It Won't Get Better" -- form a surprisingly coherent and cohesive whole despite marked differences. "Dreaming"'s accordion transports the listener to Paris' Montmartre, while "Painter" suggests the shifting sands of the Middle East. Elliott's lyric imagery in these tunes and a third track -- "The Wolf of Velvet Fortune" -- is particularly striking, and Sal Valentino's richly expressive voice elevates all three to sublime heights. Too long ignored by rock cognoscenti, Triangle is (all hyperbole aside) a fine album which deserves to be heard by a wider audience.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY STANSTED MONTFICHET, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

This great 1967 psychedelic album by the great 1960’s band represented another stage in the then-ongoing competition between THE BYRDS and THE BEAU BRUMMELS and has been out of print for years. While Beau Brummels never really achieved the level of critical and popular acclaim Byrds had, they were every bit as competent, inspired and prolific as their more popular cousins from the West Coast. This 1967 album - recorded around the same time Byrds did their "Younger than yesterday" album, was one of the classic pieces of psychedelia and one of the most beautiful, delicately produced, arranged and played pieces of hallucinogenic rock. This album, with classic, celestial harmonies, ringing and twanging guitars and songwring to match remains unsurpassed period masterpiece. A soothing balm for modern ears, not to be missed. Track listing: Are you happy - Only dreaming now - Painter of women - The keeper of time - It won't get better - Nine-pound hammer - Magic Hollow - And I've seen her - Triangle - The wolf of velvet fortune - Old Kentucky Home.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE SIDE 1 OF THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible on this side, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          WE GRADE SIDE 2 OF THE VINYL  AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those sides that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible (2 inch hairline scuff noted), but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(f)            White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(h)          Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD IS EXCELLENT TO NEAR MINT. HOWEVER, WE CAUTION THAT a record has a slight warp – a deviance of about 1 degree from its horizontal axis. This has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON PLAYING and is only a minor visual distraction.

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
