Another from my personal collection of over UK Beatles albums that I have acquired over a period of more than 45 years! I have more than 1000 UK Beatles albums alone in my collection of over 50,000 UK albums, (I rarely ever purchased foreign pressings) I have always been fascinated even to this day, by the differences in the audio mixes from one vinyl to another which is why I have so many variations in my collection. Here on offer is a totally original 1978 issued copy of The Beatles 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' What makes this 38 year old album so special is the stunning top condition! 
 The rareaty and collectability about this album is that this has obviously barely ever been played, in fact I find it hard to see that it ever has been played at all prior to me play testing the vinyl! I can just barely see one feint spider mark or spindle trace around the spindle hole, very very rare and scarce to ever find! which is very rare on a 38 year old Beatles record, which are normally found played to death! The original and correct issue Garrod & Lofthouse fully laminated cover is in exceptional condition, unusually super glossy in appearance and bright  note: I have Play tested the vinyl and recorded this for you to hear for your self in the player below, At very loud volume prior to listing The audio is very clear and vibrant throughout without signs of any distortion what so ever, if this has been played it would have only ever had one or two plays only in my opinion! I have graded the audio near as very near mint as I heard it in my opinion! No Needle scratches or Marks that would cause any nasty loud constant clicks or pops!
Basically this album is a real beauty!

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. Released on 1 June 1967, it was an immediate commercial and critical success, spending 22 weeks at the top of the albums chart in the United Kingdom and 15 weeks at number one in the United States. Time magazine declared it "a historic departure in the progress of music" and the New Statesman praised its elevation of pop to the level of fine art. It won four Grammy Awards in 1968, including Album of the Year, the first rock LP to receive this honour.





In August 1966, the Beatles permanently retired from touring and began a three-month holiday from recording. During a return flight to London in November, Paul McCartney had an idea for a song involving an Edwardian era military band that would eventually form the impetus of the Sgt. Pepper concept.





 Sessions for the Beatles' eighth studio album began on 24 November in Abbey Road Studio Two, with the original intention to record an album of material that was to be thematically linked to their childhoods. Among the first tracks recorded for the project were "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane", but after pressure from EMI the songs were released as a double A-side single; they were not included on the album.







In February 1967, after recording "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", McCartney suggested that the Beatles should release an entire album that would represent a performance by the fictional Sgt. Pepper band. This alter ego group would give them the freedom to experiment musically. During the recording sessions, the band endeavoured to improve upon the production quality of their prior releases.






Knowing they would not have to perform the tracks live, they adopted an experimental approach to composition, writing songs such as "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "A Day in the Life". The producer George Martin's innovative recording of the album included the liberal application of sound shaping signal processing and the use of a 40-piece orchestra performing aleatoric crescendos. Recording was completed on 21 April 1967.






The cover, depicting the band posing in front of a tableau of celebrities and historical figures, was designed by the English pop artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth based on a sketch by McCartney.







Sgt. Pepper is regarded by musicologists as an early concept album that advanced the use of extended form in popular music while continuing the artistic maturation seen on the Beatles' preceding releases. It has been described as one of the first art rock LPs, aiding the development of progressive rock, and credited with marking the beginning of the Album Era.







An important work of British psychedelia, the multigenre album incorporates diverse stylistic influences, including vaudeville, circus, music hall, avant-garde, and Western and Indian classical music. In 2003 the Library of Congress placed Sgt. Pepper in the National Recording Registry, honouring the work as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". That same year Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number one in its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". As of 2014 it has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. Professor Kevin J Dettmar, writing in the Oxford Encyclopedia of British Literature, described it as "the most important and influential rock and roll album ever recorded".





According to the musicologist Walter Everett, Sgt. Pepper marks the beginning of McCartney's ascendancy as the Beatles' dominant creative force. He wrote more than half of the album's material while asserting increasing control over the recording of his compositions.





He would from this point on provide the artistic direction for the group's releases. Sessions began on 24 November 1966 in Abbey Road Studio Two, the first time that the Beatles had come together since September. Afforded the luxury of a nearly limitless recording budget, they booked open-ended sessions that allowed them to work as late as they wanted. They began with three songs that they intended to issue on an album of material that would be thematically linked to their childhoods: "Strawberry Fields Forever", "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Penny Lane".






 The first session saw the introduction of a new keyboard instrument called the Mellotron whose keys triggered tape-recordings of a variety of instruments, enabling its user to play keyboard parts using those voices.










McCartney performed the introduction to "Strawberry Fields Forever" using the flute setting. The track's complicated production involved the innovative splicing of two takes that were recorded in different tempos and pitches. The EMI audio engineer, Geoff Emerick, remembers that during the recording of Revolver, "we had gotten used to being asked to do the impossible, and we knew that the word 'no' didn't exist in the Beatles' vocabulary." In Martin's opinion, Sgt. Pepper "grew naturally out of Revolver", marking "an era of almost continuous technological experimentation"

The Vinyl

The vinyl is of a substantial weight compared to later press which are much more flimsier! On initial inspection of the playing surface has retained its original sheen from new and indeed looks almost like it did the day that it came from the shop in my opinion, and lays perfectly flat on the turntable. (Please note! I have double checked this, no warping) This is free of any warping. (In strong light I find it hard to see any real surface marks or scratches), but importantly No nasty needle scratches at least no real audio sounding marks or scratches to mention ,  No marks that would cause any loud clicks or pops during the audio that I heard! No Distortion Stunning Top Audio Quality! ( Hear for yourself in the player above) Any other marks that there could possibly be would be light whispy sleeve removal scuff type only.  (Looks like a new vinyl in my opinion!)

Quite unbelievable to find on a Beatles record after 40 years!

 The Audio Quality

I have played this vinyl two  times prior to listing, at very loud volume on a top system, This 40 year old vinyl plays through as good as a new vinyl would in my opinion! Just listen to the separation and the clarity! The audio is absolutely beautiful, crystal clear and very vibrant with that deep bassey feel , only found like this on these earliest originals! I heard (no) loud clicks or pops during the audio and amazingly no real surface or background static during the audio and importantly no distortion or signs that this has been overplayed at all! There are Certainly no skips or jumps! Even in between tracks this is lovely, quite unbelievable to find like this after 38 years!  ,, without the usual background surface noise that is so often heard on these early pressings. Point to note! I heard a couple of light static type ticks at the intro to the first track on side one in the left hand channel, Importantly No problems heard during the main audio at all) That's all! I also could not see any scratches or marks!   I would grade the audio near mint throughout!

An audiophile Audio archive copy never need to upgrade in my opinion!

Please note! I always add this disclaimer! I have given my honest opinion when describing the audio quality of this album and those who know the listings and vinyls that i sell my prime interest is the audio quality! Please allow for the odd isolated static/tick/ticks as described above, but nothing heard consistent  through out the audio! No Loud constant clicks or pops! This is a genuine (not) reissue vinyl that is 38 years old and would have been played on a system that is 38 years old! Audio like new in my opinion.

Please note, this album has been stored in a case laying dormant for at least 35 years or more. A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves causes static\ crackle. A constant clean before each play is recommended. This will reduce any static and will enhance the audio quality. Points to note, I notice debrit on the playing surface after play so this will need cleaning before each play which will further enhance this audio quality.

 

 

The Labels 

This is the original black/silver EMI/Parlophone labels!  Features  "EMI Records Ltd..." rim text (correct for this 1970s pressing) A truly unique becoming scarce copy in lovely almost as unplayed condition,  ''MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN''.! (UK PRESS ONLY)!

There is (no) spindle ware (the hole is perfectly round) see photo.  Amazingly No Nasty Spidering can be seen in strong light, perhapes just one feint spider trail can be seen on each side only so rare to find like this! In my opinion this looks  barely played at all!   

The Record Sleeve

This is a plain white paper record sleeve no edge splits or tears.  light stining/browning/creasing with age only.  Made In England and Patented   The vinyl is always stored separately from the cover and record sleeve for protection. This is how I always store my records.

The Cover

This is the fully laminated Garrod & Lofthouse Gate fold cover. This is super glossy in appearance. There is no nasty creases on the cover worth to mention. Any indents you have to look for to notice in my opinion. Note! There is very minor laminate rubbing, only really noticed if looked for in my opinion. The inside is nice and clean. All text is readable and no nasty handwriting or names written. I would grade this cover at least excellent plus to very,very near mint in my opinion.

The Cut outs

These are as perfect near mint no wear or marks fully intact.
