USA SECOND PRESSING VINYL ALBUM WITH ORIGINAL WHITE INNER SLEEVE.

There are many counterfeit versions of this album, and it sometimes requires a detective-like knowledge to distinguish the difference, although, perhaps, the easiest way of telling is to play check the disc itself - something usually overlooked - the originals sound vastly superior, and are cut noticeably louder and more vibrant than any fake (having been mastered from first generation tapes sent to Vee-Jay by EMI in 1964).

Specific to this copy, and this 2nd pressing issue is: 

Full title printed on the front cover: "Introducing... The Beatles Englands No.1 Vocal Group".  

Label catalog number printed on the front cover: "LP 1062".  Label catalog number printed on the back cover: "VJLP 1062".  Label catalog number printed on the labels: "VJLP 1062"  

Distinguishing characteristics:  

Jacket:  

- Shadow behind George Harrison on front cover;  

- Track List printed in two columns on back cover;  

- "Please, Please Me" printed with comma on back cover and record label, the second 'Please' type is slightly off-centre;  

- 2nd sleeve printing [Uncredited] by Ivy Hill Lithograph Co.  

- Semi-gloss finish on both sides. 

- 1/4 inch overlap top and bottom on inside of cover. 

 Inner sleeve: 

- White 

Labels:  

- Large red oval encompassing the words Vee Jay separated by a G Clef;  

- Rainbow-colored ring encircles the perimeter;  

- "INTRODUCING the BEATLES" printed centered below Vee Jay emblem 

- "THE BEATLES" printed centered below album title. 

- Deep groove inner ring circling most of the letters except part of the last track details on each side. 

MATRIX:  SIDE A:  (etched) 63-3402 URJ /  SIDE B: (etched) 63-3403 URJ.  This hand etched URT / Columbia pressing is the only genuine pressing known to not have any stamped matrix details. 

SLEEVE: VERY GOOD+, JUST LIGHT SHELF, CORNER, EDGE AND RING WEAR.  ONLY DEFECT IS A DIME SIZED STAIN BOTTOM RIGHT FRONT CORNER. INNER SLEEVE HAS SEAM SPLITS.

DISC[S]: VERY GOOD+. SIDE ONE HAS ONE SMALL SCRATCH IN 'ANNA' WHICH CLICKS A FEW TIMES, A FEW FINGERPRINTS AND SOME HAIRLINES. SIDE TWO HAS SOME HAIRLINES AND A SCUFF, NONE OF WHICH SOUND.  THE ONLY DEFECT ON AN OTHERWISE VERY DECENT COPY OF THE FAB FOUR'S FIRST USA ALBUM, IS A SMALL PRESSING INDENTATION IN THE MIDDLE OF TRACK 5 ON BOTH SIDES.  THIS PLAYED THROUGH FINE ON A REGA RP10, BUT SOME STYLUS/TURNTABLES MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE THIS. CLEAN LABELS WITH SOME, BUT NOT A LOT, OF SPINDLE WEAR.  OVERALL, CLEARLY A PLAYED DISC, BUT NOT A WORN-OUT BATTERED COPY BY ANY MEANS.  THIS IS A VERY DECENT EXAMPLE OF AN INCREASINGLY RARE ALBUM.

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?

First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.

First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.

On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.
