Description
On auction is a lovely EXCELLENT condition BEATLES LP – PLEASE PLEASE ME – released on the BLACK and GOLD PARLOPHONE label PMC 1202 in MONO in 1963.
This is the UK MONO FIRST PRESS that has the ‘Dick James Mus.’ publishing credits on the disc label for the tracks I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Ask Me Why and Please Please Me on Side 1. On Side 2 – Do You Want To Know a Secret and There’s a Place – also have the 'Dick James Mus.’ publishing credits.
Matrix: Side 1 is XEX 421-1N and Side 2 is XEX 422-1N
Stamper: Side 1 is 1P and Side 2 is 1L.
There is another Beatles Gold and Black mono currently on sale on eBay also with the stampers 1-Pand 1-L being described as the ‘earliest’ he or she had seen! So these must be early ones as well as they are from the same batch!
The black and gold record labels are in SUPERB condition: with no visible spindle or other marks.
The front laminated flip-back sleeve has the 'Ernest J.Day & Co Ltd' credit. The front cover has the large 'mono' front indicator together with Angus McBean Photograph credit printed at the extreme [bottom] right hand corner. The sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition: with only one very minor crease in the top right hand corner. There are no seam spilts: and both the laminated front and non-laminated back are very clean and clear [see scans]. There is a tiny crease in the flip back in the very bottom left hand corner of the back sleeve. This is a lovely FIRST PRESS sleeve indeed!
The original USE ‘EMITEX’ polythene lined inner sleeve is in fabulous EX+ condition: the disc is now housed in a plain white inner – to preserve this original ‘EMITEX’ inner. Both inners will be supplied to the winner.
As regards the vinyl – my overall assessment is that it is EXCELLENT – and would grace any BEATLES collection: as it has mine for over 40 years.
Side 1 of the vinyl is visually in nice EXCELLENT condition: with a very nice sheen / gloss to the vinyl. There are a couple of very tiny hairline surface marks only: nothing unsightly and nothing that affects play. I am tempted to say this side is visually EX+.
Side 2 of the vinyl is visually in nice EXCELLENT condition: with a very nice sheen / gloss to the vinyl. There are a couple of minor hairline surface marks: and two more visible surface marks that do not affect play. Neither of these are deep: neither of these affect play.
I have test played the LP on my Bose hi-fi and it sounded superb with a full dynamic range. There is a tiny amount of crackle audible between a small number of the tracks BUT this is minor and does not detract from a very pleasurable listening experience. You can be confident if you bid on this LP that it will be a Beatles gold-black mono LP that you would enjoy listening to and having in your collection: just as I have enjoyed having it in mine.
