This auction is for a very rare 1969 MONO press of the Beatles LP 'Please Please Me'!

This is the 1969 press that features the old yellow / black label design but omits the 'Sold in the UK' statement! These are incredibly rare and hardly ever turn up for sale!

In mid 1969 the tax laws that required UK domestic presses to feature the 'Sold in the UK...' statement since 1964 were changed, and so this text on the label was removed. This happened literally just a couple of months before Parlophone adopted the EMI 'one box' silver / black label design that the other EMI labels were beginning to use. By the time this was happening the fans were buying albums like Abbey Road and Let It Be and the earlier albums were barely selling at all.

Not only that, but this is the even more rare MONO pressing! By 1969 mono was a completely dead, obsolete format and everybody was buying stereo. Parlophone only produced a tiny, tiny amount of mono copies with this label variation before the format was pulled.

So we have a label variation that was only available for a couple of months in a format that nobody wanted at a time when nobody was really buying the album. It's because of this that, today, this variation is incredibly hard to find!

This would look great in any Beatles collection!

The cover is looking nice and has some light, general wear and tear. The front has a nice colour with a little dirt buildup on the laminate. There's laminate creasing around the edges and one larger crease that runs almost parallel to the mouth opening. Top and bottom seams are holding tight with no wear or splitting. The spine has a couple of little laminate creases running through it but has not split and is fully legible. The back cover has yellowed slightly with some light stains in one or two places. There's some disc impression with it being a little more noticeable at the mouth edge. the overflaps have some little creases in them but are stuck tightly. the bottom right, however, seems to have torn away slightly. Overall, though, the cover is holding nicely.   The Inner Sleeve: VG-
The original red EMI inner is included. it's holding up okay but has yellowed a little with light creasing and disc impression. One of the side seams has split by about 2" or so in the middle.   Disc (Visually Graded Only!!) : VG+/EX-

The playing surface has a lovely, crisp shine to it. On side 1 there's a slightly heavier scuffmark at the 1 o'clock position but it looks pretty light and is unfeelable under the fingernail. On side 2 there's a large, light, faint scuffmark at the 7 o'clock position, but it's really only visible if you hold the disc under a certain angle under light. The rest of the playing surface is pretty much clear bar one or two very faint little scuffs. Nice disc!

The labels are clean, crisp and clear with bright silver text. There's a fair amount of light spindlewear that has caused some white scratching to appear around the centrehole, but there's no writing, stickers or anything. Decent labels, shame about the spindlewear.
