Another from my personal collection, of Beatles and Beatles related records! Collected over a period of more than 40 years! I have accumilated more than 1000 Beatles UK albums alone. What a fantastic album to have in your collection! This record is virtually unplayed condition! and has been stored in a case for more than 30 years!! Visually and audibly I would grade the vinyl as very near mint condition and even the original 1st issue Garrod & Lofthouse cover is in truly exceptional condition, very hard to keep this way indeed! Try to find another in this condition, almost impossible to find like this!

Straight Up is the third album by power rock\pop band Badfinger, released on December 13, 1971. It is widely regarded as Badfinger's best album!, spawning two Top 20 singles in the U.S. and being commercially successful in its own right!!. The album was released on the The Beatles' Apple Records label and was unavailable for many years after it closed. It became a highly sought-after album by collectors until it was finally re-issued on CD in 1993!!

Recordings for Straight Up began in early 1971 under the direction of producer Geoff Emerick, who produced the bulk of Badfinger's preceding album No Dice. Although these early recordings were completed and both the album and a single, "Name of the Game", were ready to be released, Apple Records co-president George Harrison decided the album could be improved under his personal direction, which led the single to be canceled. Harrison recorded a couple of new tracks with the band in the summer of 1971, as well as re-recording a couple of the original tracks. He can be heard playing a slide-guitar duet with Pete Ham on the song "Day After Day", with Leon Russell featured on piano!!. Additionally, Harrison and Phil Spector planned a different string arrangement for "Name of the Game", but this apparently never came to pass. Due to a hurriedly-assembled benefit concert that summer, The Concert for Bangladesh, at which Badfinger performed, Harrison lost interest in the Straight Up project and did not return to it after the concert. Apple retained Todd Rundgren to finish the album. Rundgren utilised recordings begun by both Emerick and Harrison, re-recorded some of them, and also recorded several new tracks with the band (notably "Baby Blue") in less than a month!!.

 Although production credit for individual songs on the album is given to both Rundgren and Harrison, Rundgren did the final mix of the entire album (and was upset that he was given neither a co-production nor a mixing credit for any of the Harrison songs). Consistent with the title of the album, the front cover featured a "straight up" picture of Badfinger, with no credits or titles marring the image. The title was instead shown on the back cover!!.

Badfinger was a rock band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s that became one of the earliest prototypes of the post-'60s power pop genre!

 The band was at times tagged as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with them and partly because of their similar sound.

Badfinger had four consecutive worldwide hit songs in 1970-71, as well as recording the original version of "Without You," a frequently-covered song that became a Billboard #1 hit for Harry Nilsson and a #3 hit for Mariah Carey. After their initial hit song on The Beatles' record label, Apple – "Come and Get It" (which was written by Paul McCartney) – the band members entrusted their financial affairs to an American businessman Stan Polley. Internal squabbling, artistic differences, and allegations of financial mismanagement eventually led to a freeze on the band's activities and income. Founding member Pete Ham committed suicide on April 24, 1975, leaving a damning note about Stan Polley!!.

The band folded following Ham's death, and various subsequent attempts to reform Badfinger floundered. Band member Tom Evans, who saw Pete Ham's body hanging, also committed suicide on November 19, 1983. Evans never got over his friend's suicide, and has been quoted by many as saying in darker moments, "I wanna be where he is."  The band's story was once described as "the classic rags-to-riches story with a tragic Shakespearean ending!!.

Badfinger originated in 1961 in Swansea, Wales, calling themselves The Panthers. The Panthers' lineup contained Pete Ham (lead guitar) (born Peter William Ham, 27 April 1947, in Townhill, Swansea, Wales died 23 April 1975), Ron Griffiths (bass guitar) (born Ronald Llewellyn Griffiths, 2 October 1946, in Swansea, Wales), Roy Anderson (drums), and David 'Dai' Jenkins (guitar) (born David Owen Jenkins, 30 October 1945, in Swansea, Wales). After a handful of moniker changes, by 1964 they settled on The Iveys, named after a street in Swansea called Ivey Place. In March 1965, drummer Mike Gibbins (born Michael George Gibbins, 12 March 1949, in Swansea, Wales died 4 October 2005) joined the Iveys. The band was able to land gigs around Swansea area, opening for prominent UK groups such as the Spencer Davis Group, The Who, The Moody Blues and The Yardbirds.[1] By June 1966, Bill Collins took over management of the Iveys. The entire band moved into Collins' home at 7 Park Avenue, Golders Green, London, sharing space with another act called The Mojos.[1] The group performed a few gigs as a backing band for David Garrick while continuing to perform as themselves across the UK throughout the rest of the decade.

 In 1967, Jenkins was asked to leave the group because of a lack of seriousness. He was replaced by Liverpudlian guitarist Tom Evans of Them Calderstones (born Thomas Evans Jr, 5 June 1947, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England died 19 November 1983). As a well-received stage act on the London circuit, The Iveys performed a wide range of cover tunes from Motown, blues, soul to Top 40, psychedelic pop, and Beatles hits. They consistently garnered interest from record labels. Ray Davies of The Kinks auditioned to produce them by recording three of their songs at a demo studio in London, after Pye Records had encouraged him to do so!!.

 However, it was not until Mal Evans (the longtime "roadie" for The Beatles and an employee of their Apple Records label) took up the Iveys' cause that they were finally signed on 23 July 1968, thus becoming the first non-Beatle recording artists for Apple!!.

 Mal Evans had pushed several demo tape reels of the group to each of the individual Beatles until he received approval to sign the band from all four: Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon. Lennon was said to have found it difficult to believe their recordings were accomplished using a mono "sound-on-sound" tape recorder (two individual tracks bouncing each overdub on top of the last).[1] Each of The Iveys members were also signed to Apple Corps' an Apple Publishing contract!!.

Badfinger: The Apple years!

 In October 1969, while the release of "Come and Get It" was pending, the band and Apple Records agreed that a name change was crucial. "The Iveys" were still sometimes confused with "The Ivy League", and the name was considered too trite for the current music scene. Suggestions came from all corners, including John Lennon's "The Glass Onion," "The Prix", and "The Cagneys", and "Home" from Paul McCartney. The name Badfinger was suggested by Apple's Neil Aspinall, and was a reference to "Bad Finger Boogie", an early working title of Lennon/McCartney's "With a Little Help from My Friends"; supposedly, Lennon had composed the melody on a piano using only one finger, after having hurt his forefinger. (Later quotes from Paul McCartney suggest it was he who'd composed the song's chords and melody.) With the release date of "Come and Get It" fast approaching, Badfinger needed to replace Griffiths. After auditioning a number of bassists, they hired Liverpudlian guitarist Joey Molland (previously with Gary Walker & The Rain, The Masterminds, and The Fruit-Eating Bears) (born Joseph Charles Molland, 21 June 1947, in Edge Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England), an addition which required Evans to shift to bass guitar. "Come and Get It" was released in December 1969 in the U.K. and January 1970 in the U.S. It reached Top 10 throughout the world, including #3 on the U.S. Billboard chart. The track was also featured in The Magic Christian film. For the group's initial LP release, their three songs from the soundtrack LP were remixed, combined with some older Iveys tracks (including seven songs from the Maybe Tomorrow album, and released as Badfinger's first album Magic Christian Music. Two songs were completed, including "No Matter What," but the song was rejected by Apple staff as a potential single!!.

 Badfinger toured America for three months in late 1970 and were generally well received, although the group was already weary of constant comparisons to The Beatles.Media comparisons between Badfinger and The Beatles would continue throughout Badfinger's career. During this time, various members of Badfinger also recorded on sessions for fellow Apple Records labelmates, most notably playing acoustic guitars on tracks from George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and providing backing vocals on Ringo Starr's single "It Don't Come Easy". Evans and Molland performed on John Lennon's album Imagine, and all four members of the band appeared as backup musicians throughout George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971, with Ham duetting with George Harrison on "Here Comes the Sun".

The vinyl

 This is the original thick heavy and chunky slab of vinyl, only found like this on the earliest pressings. On initial visual inspection the vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and looks absolutely stunning it is hard to see a blemish on the playing surface and it is obvious to me that this vinyl has barely ever been playeed at all!  Any marks that could possibly be seen under a strong lamp would be whispy sleeve removal marks/scuffs only perhaps just two or three minor scuffs but certainly no audio sounding marks on this vinyl!  (no) marks that would cause any clicks or pops!

The Audio Quality

I have played this vinyl track for track one time prior to listing, at very l;oud volume on a top system! The moment that the needle hits the playing surface it is obvious that this vinyl both visually and audible has barely ever been played at all! The audio was absolutely stunning! Near as perfect on my systems,, This plays as good as new! You will not find a better sounding copy in my opinion, pressed from the earliest master, '1' to ' 1' mothers provide the best audio quality available on vinyl in my opinion and cannot be surpased by any other format!!

Audio graded as near as mint in my opinion!!

Please note! That i always make this disclaimer! That although I never heard any clicks or pops during the play of these records, please allow for the odd static here and there certainly not consistant throughout the audio, but this is a genuine 39 year old vinyl that would have been played on a 39 year old system!

Points to note! This has been stored in a case laying dormant for at least 35 years! A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves from laying dormant causes static crackle\ticks! A constant clean before each play is recomended ! This would reduce any static and enhance the audio quality!

The Labels

These are like new! Features the 'DARK APPLE' logo for side 1. (only 1st press)  any spidering that could possibly be seen indicates that this has only ever been played  three or four times ever!!

The sleeve

Original plain white EMI paper sleeve. no edge splits or tares!

The Cover

This is the original 1st issue Fully laminated Garrod & Lofthouse cover. Extreemely hard to find or keep in good condition! This cover is in truly exceptional condition no splits or tares! Absolutely super glossy appearence indeed when angled to the light there is a slight indication that a large sticker has been removed at some stage but not realy noticable unless scrutinised! Very light rubbing ringware only noticable if angled to the light at the rear! All text at the spine is fully legable! Any storageware or rubbing at the edges  is very minimal indeed. Also minor laminate creases at the front top right to mention and minor laminate creases at the edges! Super glossy in appearence and strong and straight as it should be! I would grade this cover at least a very, very strong excellent if not better in my opinion!
