ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This fine LP from Fontana (200.060 WGL, French pressing, gray label, mono) features legendary violinist Michèle Auclair in a stirring account of Brahms’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 77, recorded with conductor Willem van Otterloo in Vienna on 30 September 1958. At the end of the First Movement she plays Joseph Joachim’s cadenza.

All of Auclair’s regrettably slender discography is worth seeking out and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to savor here – this is exalted playing by any measure and Otterloo, ever an able accompanist, provides richly textured support.

There are brief liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Henry-Jacques, provided in French only, as well as a list of other titles in Fontana’s “le cercle musical” series.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is a minor tear near the lower-right corner, as well as discoloration, edgewear, and ringwear. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the whole remains solid and presentation worthy – not a collector’s copy, but still a passable one.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not perfectly silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. If you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
