This lovely and exceedingly rare LP, a winner of the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Academie Cros, from Musique et Culture (MC 3003 GU, French pressing, yellow/black label, mono, booklet included) features Michèle Auclair and Geneviève Joy's radiant account of Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 5 in Major Op. 24 'Spring'.

A remarkable series, these Musique et Culture issues were intended to provide, in addition to a superlative recording, a masterclass on the work at hand. Thus, Side 1 is devoted to Auclair's sublime 'Spring' Sonata, while Side 2 is given over to an extended discussion, interspersed with musical excerpts, of Beethoven's Op. 24.

Included is a 4-page booklet with detailed analysis of each movement (exposition, development, etc.) and illustrations from the score. The spoken commentaries are by Marianne Rudloff and Jean Duchene based on the written analysis of Albert Jungblut.

Really, for the professional violinist or admirer of the art of the violin, this is quite an exceptional production. To my knowledge this remains the only issues of Auclair and Joy's 'Spring' Sonata, one which can withstand the most exalted comparisons – wonderful!

This album was produced by Albert Jungblut and engineered by Marius Briançon. The striking cover design was executed by Fr. Pousse.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is mild discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the whole remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very fine collector's copy.

The condition of the 4-page, full-size booklet is NM-. The only flaw concerns some minor writing (a single word) to the upper-right corner of the booklet front. Otherwise it is nearly like new.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though surfaces are not perfectly silent, really this a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
