Item: Rare original 1957 first press of “At The Hop” b/w “Sometimes” by Danny And The Juniors on the blue Singular label.  Check discogs to see how this compares to the other (later versions).  Basically, the 45 would have been available in the Philly area for 6 months or so.  It was released in the Summer of ’57 on Singular, became a local hit in Philly, and subsequent issues from January, ’58 onward were on the ABC Paramount label.  The Singular release features the intro count off at the beginning of the song.  Check popsike for value(s).  Apparently this record books in Kreiter for 800 USD, but popsike shows an auction record at 835 USD.  From the net: “Danny Rapp (lead), Frank Maffei (2nd tenor), Joe Terranova (baritone) (aka Joe Terry), and Dave White Tricker (1st tenor) (aka Dave White) met at John Bartram High School and started singing together in the mid 1950s. Known as the Juvenaires at the time, they sang at school parties and other local events. Local record producer John Madara took notice of them and introduced them to local DJ's Larry Brown and Artie Singer, who had a record label known as Singular Records. In 1957, they recorded a Dave White penned song "Do the Bop", and Singer took it to a fellow DJ named Dick Clark. Clark liked it and suggested changing their name to the Juniors and re-naming their song. They rerecorded it as "At the Hop" and it became a local hit in June 1957. In December 1957, they received a call from Dick Clark to be a last minute substitution for a no-show band on American Bandstand, and they performed it for a national audience.  The song became a nationwide hit after ABC Paramount bought the master recording and issued it in January 1958. They soon appeared on The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom, and other national TV shows. Condition: Records may not function as intended per surface noise, defective playback due to manufacturing defect or scratches, etc. and any extant sleeves/covers often have damage such as flawed edges and odors which may require repair or treatment, so I’m selling the item as being in “For parts or not working” condition. Most records are in scratched condition. See Goldmine Record Album Price Guide, 5th Edition, page 17: “It’s estimated that no more than 2 to 4 percent of all records remaining from the 1950’s and 1960s are truly Near Mint” (and the next grade down from Near Mint is VG+, where light scratches are present). It amazes me that the world of record collecting doesn’t have an official grading company such as in the comic book field (they have CGC), the coin collecting realm (they have PCGS), etc. Until an official 3rd party industry expert comes along, record grading remains subjective and opinions vary due to parties’ differences in audio equipment, etc.
