Description
Up for auction is Blue Note 4029, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers' “The Big Beat.” This record features Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. The album has the following tracks: Side One 1) The Chess Players, 2) Sakeena’s Vision, 3) Politely, and Side Two: 1) Dat Dere, 2) Lester Left Town, 3) It’s Only a Paper Moon
Recorded in March of 1960, "The Big Beat" was the first Jazz Messengers album to feature tenor saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter. In fact, three of the six tracks are Shorter compositions: Politely, Dat Dere, and Lester Left Town have all become jazz standards - a testament to the enduring quality of this inaugural album of the Shorter-era Jazz Messengers.
SLEEVE: NM, with no dog-ears, no ringwear, no discoloration, no seam splits. An acquisition date of July 6, 1960 is written in blue pen on the back of the jacket along with a few track timings.
RECORD: NM, with extremely light scuffing from coming in and out of the sleeve, otherwise pristine. Deep grooves on both sides, Plastylite P or "ear" in dead wax, 47 W 63rd address
I am a university professor of music here in the US who inherited this and other records (Blue Note, Norgran, Impulse!, Columbia, Prestige, Fantasy, Riverside, etc.) from a collector and former radio DJ a few years back. I am looking to sell off some of these records to collectors/audiophiles who can get more enjoyment out of them than I can.
