Description
On offer in this auction is the 12" long playing record "ARNOLD SCHOENBERG STRING QUARTET NO. 2 played by THE KOLISCH STRING QUARTET on ALCO ALP-1003". In 1950 the very small independent Los Angeles record label ALCO re-released in a series of four records, (all on red vinyl), the Four String Quartets of Arnold Schoenberg, originally recorded by the Kolisch Quartet in 1937 and released in a very limited deluxe album edition of only 75 sets. The Kolisch Quartet, dedicated to the works of the (then) new Viennese composers, was formed in 1928 by it's leader, first violinist, and Schoenberg's brother-in-law, Rudolf Kolisch.
PLEASE NOTE- In two other separate auctions I will have on offer two other Schoenberg ALCO 12" long playing records of String Quartets No.1 and No.4, on ALCO ALP-1002 and ALP-1005 respectively. This series of ALCO LP's are the rarest and historically most significant of all the LP records of Schoenberg's music.
The offered record, String Quartet No.2 ALP-1003, is in wonderful VG+ condition with the jacket being clean on the front and its blank back, except for the number '59' written in small characters in ink on a top corner of both sides of the cover. There is some edge wear and about a 3" split at the top and bottom of the jacket at the opening.There is NO tape on the jacket edges. Significantly, this record contains the lyric insert sheet inside the cover that is usually missing from the few copies of this record that exist. The disc and labels are clean and the sound is strong with light surface noise. For the number of years I have had these records, the disc has been stored in a sleeve outside the cover with both the jacket and disc protected by an archivral mylar. Please remember this is a re-release of a 1937 recording, not a new 1950 recording! Significantly, this, and the other ALCO records I have on offer are NOT library copies!
