Across The Universe: Music From The Motion Picture, IVC edition. It is brand new and has never been opened, so still sealed. This 3LP deluxe collector’s edition is a one-time pressing of 3,000 copies on vinyl for the first time. It is individually numbered and features remastered audio, opaque white (LP1), opaque blue/red mix (LP2) and opaque strawberry vinyl (LP3), a tri-fold jacket featuring internal landscape montage of film stills and drawings by Don Nace, custom printed sleeves, and a bonus lithograph. Director Julie Tay has a mor’s 2007 jukebox musical film using Beatles songs to tell the story of a group of people in 1960s Greenwich Village remains, as Roger Ebert wrote at the time, a “bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical.” The accompanying audacious soundtrack deftly finds the line between heartwarming homage and radical reinvention.
The 31-track collection blends rock gods (Bono on “I Am the Walrus” and “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” Joe Cocker on “Come Together”), indie darlings (Secret Machines’ woozy psych-rock covers of “Flying” and “Blue Jay Way”) and a gifted cast that reimagines your favorite band’s cherished classics.
Evan Rachel Wood’s jangle-pop takes on “It Won’t Be Long” and “Hold Me Tight” melds deftly with stars Jim Sturgess and Joe Anderson’s intense covers of “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Salma Hayek (“Happiness is a Warm Gun”) and Eddie Izzard (“Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite”) round out the all-star soundtrack.
