GERT MORTENSEN : --------------------------------------------------------
was born in 1958 . He studied in the solo class at the Royal Danish Conservatory and has since 1977 been a member of the Royal Danish Orchestra . He has rapidly shown himself to be one of the leading percussionists in Denmark . In 1980 he was awarded the Jacob Gade prize, in 1982 the Carl Nielsen prize and in 1983 both the Gladsaxe Music Prize and the prize of the Danish music critics . He represented Denmark with notable success at the Nordic Soloist Biennale in Stockholm in 1982 . Together with Per Norgard and others Gert Mortensen has studied Gamelan music on Bali and brought home from there numerous instruments which are not included in the usual West European percussion instrumentarium .
Besides Per Norgard, other Danish composers such as Niels Viggo Bentzon, Bo Holten and Poul Ruders have written works specially for Gert Mortensen whose career now includes solo and orchestral concerts and radio and TV broadcasts throughout most of Europe and the USA . Norgard’s I Ching he performed at the ISCM festival in the Danish city of Arhus in the autumn of 1983, a performance which aroused critical acclaim .
