Having gone digital I now need to make some space, so my collection is gradually appearing here. I'm not an expert, so I have tried to provide as much detail as possible. Comments or corrections from experts or enthusiasts are always welcome if it helps me to provide an accurate description.
Almost certainly the best record ever on the highly collectable Village Thing label. The label was started by Ian A. Anderson as a showcase for his own work and some of the more neglected acts on the folk and blues scene. Ian himself was a leading light of the sixties blues scene in the UK, touring with some of the legends from the States and partnering Mike Cooper before going solo again, then forming Hot Vultures (with Maggie Holland) and The English Country Blues Band. Nowadays he is best known as proprietor/editor of fRoots magazine as well as broadcasting and championing World Music, having introduced acts such as Dembo Konte. Kausu Kuyateh, Tarika and many others to British audiences. All this is by the way, but serves to demonstrate that the guy has taste! Which brings us to Al Jones. Al has never sought recognition, which only partly explains why he is so little known to the general public. Ian knew him from the local Bristol folk/blues scene and promptly signed him to his new label, knowing a class act when he heard one. This is a great singer, musician and songwriter, who cannot be pigeonholed... Contemporary Folk? Blues? Rock? Progressive? He's all of these yet none of them; he is Al Jones, he is unique. Having just played the album for the first time in years I am impressed all over again. It is as fresh now as it was when I first heard it over 30 years ago.
On this album of songs and instrumentals Al plays 6 string 12 string, electric, and "Leslied" guitars and reverser as well as singing the vocal parts. He is accompanied on various tracks by Pete "Boris" Moody on electric bass, Tony Fennell on drums, Dave Gillis on electric piano and organ, and Graham Smith on a very bluesey harmonica and additional vocals. The production is by Ian A. Anderson and the album was mastered by George Peckham at Apple. The sleeve design is an early classic by Rodney Matthews (Plastic Dog) and the sleeve itself is by Shorepack and laminated front and back. This may be a small label but it's a very professional package.
"Al Jones is one of the long-lost treasures of the British folk club scene.
For a time there in the 60's his guitar adriotness and his exceptional
songwriting marked him as a star turn with a glittering future." (Colin Irwin)... more
The cover design is by Rodney Matthews and Terry Brace at Plastic Dog. Rodney has since become one of the most respected Fantasy artists in the world. He has done sleeves for Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, Asia, The Scorpions, Barclay James Harvest, Magnum (10), and Rick Wakeman. His originals are sought after by celebrities, John Cleese and Terry Jones being amongst his fans. Sir Gerald Nabarro once waved some of Rod's artwork in the House of Commons during a debate on pornography! Many of his paintings have been issued as posters, and he has illustrated books including Michael Moorcock's 'Elric at the End of Time'
