PER RARE 1970 SWEDISH ORIGINAL PRESSING
TOP FLIGHT PROGRESSIVE ROCK
MINTY CLEAN VINYL
MADE IN SWEDEN
MADE IN ENGLAND
\ SWEDEN - SONET RECORDS - SLP 2512 = MONO/STEREO
RARE 1970 original Swedish first pressing in laminated gatefold cover...one you seldom ever see...a full fire progressive rock affair with a burning sound...
Made In Sweden, produced by Colosseum's Tony Reeves, opens with "Winter's a bummer", a real showcase. Everything is here, the fluid guitarwork backed up by a powerful, very 'sparkling' bassplaying and the jazzy drumming. There are also some calmer tracks here, with some very tasteful arrangments. Also a more blues influenced track occurs in the end. "Love Samba" is another very catchy and a 'smoking' track, allowing the members to stretch out and flex their 'musical muscles'
Made In Sweden has a very rich sound - as if there were more musicians than 3 performing on the album. While Made In Sweden prefers to sing in English and to play music that is typical for early British Progressive (exactly of the same in 1970) ...the listener won't hear any Swedish (at least Scandinavian) roots at all, and one can easily hear that their music is all their own: it's as highly original as music of the majority of underground prog-rock bands of the time. One could only think of the best recordings of Burnin Red Ivanhoe or classic 1970 UK prog gems when listening to this one. Its amazing what unusual sounds and feel that group can get into, and how full a sound they are able to get from what is basically a trio. Yes, talking of originality, consider a bands charisma as the main trump of any artist of any genre. It's obvious, however, even the best manifestations of progressive-music demonstrates various forms of true originality. So, concerning the progressive sound, there are at least two important points that artists of this genre need for their music to be of a high 'progressive' quality; the composition (including arrangements) and performance (including the musicianship). Listening to "MAD RIVER" you find those (progressive) 'ingredients' that are necessary to rate it as an excellent album. However, bear in mind that "MAD RIVER" was released at the very dawn of progressive music scene, and a seasoned progressive collector would almost have to admit that this is a bit more than just an excellent progressive album. Each of the eight songs featured on the album are filled with finely honed instrumental arrangements & passages interplay. If you listen to the album repeatedly you may not be able to 'choose' which of the songs you like most. Probably, this case just indicates the band's stability, in other words the equal quality of the 'production' the band is able to offer the listener at the moment. The mastery musicianship of each of the three members is really amazing, and their joint instrumental work-outs is especially impressive. Remember, 1970 was already a year of several progressive monster-albums (read 'pure masterpieces') However, such a lesser known, or even unknown album as "MAD RIVER" by Made In Sweden was a significant document of the development of progressive rock.
The music the band performs is so intriguing and interesting, it's so sincere, after all, still sounds incredibly refreshing even now - some 40 years after the album was recorded and released. All in all, "MAD RIVER" is one of the best little known/unknown progressive album secrets of 1970.
